CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Battery fell behind on two occasions, and it was the club’s leading goal scorer who helped the host side as Romario Williams’ brace was crucial in Charleston earning a 2-2 draw against Ottawa Fury FC on Saturday at MUSC Health Stadium. It marked Charleston’s first meeting against the USL newcomer. Williams scored a first-half equalizer in the 41st minute and then an 84th-minute, game-tying goal, both assisted by Maikel Chang. Charleston is now 4-1-1 (13 points) this season while Ottawa moves to 1-2-2 (5 points).

Scoring:
22’ – OTT – Ryan Williams
41’ – CHS – Romario Williams (Maikel Chang)
56’ – OTT – Ramon Martin Del Campo (Ryan Williams)
84’ – CHS – Romario Williams (Maikel Chang)

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. Charleston has a knack for finding combinations that work. The Justin Portillo to Forrest Lasso combo has been well documented. On Saturday, it was Maikel Chang to Romario Williams. Chang set up Williams in the 41st minute with a needed goal to tie things up before halftime. The buildup came from a midfield possession, Portillo found Chang and Chang’s left-footed cross went to Williams. Williams snuck his shot inside the near right post to make it 1-1. Then in the 84th minute, again down by a goal, that combination struck again. This time Chang had more space to work with down the right, and Williams simply had to tap it in to tie things up at 2-2.

  • 2. Ottawa will walk away disappointed that it didn’t come away with more than a point. Fury FC enjoyed two leads on the road and at times held some numbers against the Battery’s back line. Ryan Williams had a superb free kick strike to open the scoring in the 22nd minute. With the wall taking away the right side of the frame, Williams fired toward the left post and pitted the shot past Odisnel Cooper.

  • 3. Charleston’s Williams now has seven goals in six games. He is just three goals away from matching his 2016 total of 10. As a team, Charleston now has 15 goals on the season. Five of the six games have featured two or more goals from the Battery offense.
