VANCOUVER – Goalkeepers Spencer Richey and Evan Newton each stepped up for their sides on Saturday, as Sacramento Republic FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 shared the points in a 0-0 tie at UBC Thunderbird Stadium. With both sides battling each other and the weather, Sacramento netminder Newton made key saves in the second half to secure a road point. Republic FC is now 3-3-1 (10 points) this campaign, while WFC2 has a 2-2-2 (8 points) record.

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. Sacramento entered Saturday’s match leading the USL with total shots this season, and while the road side added to that number, Vancouver netminder Spencer Richey was up to the task each time. He made a total of five saves in 90 minutes of action, including multiple close-range stops in the first half. In the 13th minute, Richey prevented Tyler Blackwood from netting the opener, and two minutes later, the goalkeeper made a spectacular fingertip save to stop a Danny Barrera opportunity.
  • 2. While Evan Newton did not face as many shots as his Vancouver counterpart, the Republic FC goalkeeper came up big when needed. In the 62nd minute of play, WFC2’s David Normon sent a perfect cross in from the left wing, and Gloire Amanda was there to put a shot on frame. Newton made the reaction save, however, keeping the score line level. Newton then made another incredible stop in the 72nd minute, denying Thomas Sanner from point-blank range to preserve the shutout – the club’s fourth of the season.
  • 3. Including Saturday’s match, Republic FC has now been held scoreless four consecutive matches. The 2014 USL Cup winner scored eight goals in its first three games of the year, but the club has not been able to tally a goal in recent weeks. Now, Paul Buckle’s men will head to Texas to play undefeated San Antonio FC, which has only conceded four goals all year.
