There’s only one player currently in the USL who sits in both the top two in goals and the top three in assists -- San Antonio FC’s Billy Forbes.

After Tuesday night’s 3-2 victory against Seattle Sounders FC 2, Forbes has five goals and three assists so far this season. Forbes has played a role in more than half of San Antonio’s 14 goals this season, a marked uptick from 2016 in the club’s attacking prowess.

And yet, look at Forbes’ numbers and it seems somewhat remarkable that this is the case. Fun fact: In his 45 minutes against Seattle, Forbes had as many goals as he had completed passes and completed dribbles. Overall this season, he's completed only 62.8 percent of his passes, a number that drops below 50 percent in the opposition half, and has connected on only two of 15 attempted crosses.

Compare that to the New York Red Bulls II’s Vincent Bezecourt and Louisville City FC’s George Davis IV – both of whom have also gotten off to stellar starts this season as well.

Player Minutes Goals Assists Chances Created Passes Completed Pass Accuracy Pass Accuracy Oppo. Half
Billy Forbes 458 5 3 8 54 62.8% 48.1%
Vincent Bezecourt 539 5 2 10 140 65.4% 57.7%
George Davis IV 425 3 1 7 112 75.7% 71.7%

But that shouldn’t be seen as a knock on Forbes, or what he’s doing for San Antonio. In fact, his willingness to make a move that could lead to an attacking chance is exactly what has made him so effective. Forbes has completed 19 dribbles in 478 minutes, an average of better than four per 90 minutes. Here’s one of them, against Reno in Week 4.

San Antonio goes into Friday night’s contest with Portland six games undefeated this season. With Forbes helping provide a cutting edge in attack, the side’s turnaround from its below-average offensive output a season ago is decidedly a thing of the past.

Walls Adds to Saint Louis Midfield

Saint Louis FC announced late last week the signing of midfielder Tony Walls, and in his first appearance for the side against the Charlotte Independence the 2015 USL Cup winner put in a solid performance as he gets acclimated to his new surroundings.

Coming on at halftime for Octavio Guzman, Walls was highly active when Saint Louis was in possession, attempting 45 passes over the course of the half. Playing in almost exactly the same space as Guzman had occupied in the first half alongside Tyler David, Walls completed 77.8 percent of his passes, looking to stretch the play a little more than Guzman had with seven long passes compared to Guzman’s one before the break.

Finding his rhythm for those types of passes could take some time. As indicated by his pass chart, the searching balls into the final third were the majority of Walls’ missed attempts as he looks to find the right weight and angle that will put the likes of Jose Angulo and Christian Volesky into dangerous places. With Walls and Volesky having worked together previously in Rochester, though, it will be interesting to see on Thursday night against Orlando (7:30 p.m. ET | Preview) how quickly that combination can reconnect as Walls looks to bring his dynamism to the middle of the park.
