IRVINE, Calif. – Orange County SC announced on Thursday it had acquired midfielder Carlos Alvarez on loan from its MLS partner Los Angeles FC for the 2017 USL season.

Alvarez, 26, grew up in Los Angeles and played for Bishop Mora Salesian High School, where he was invited to play for both the United States and Mexico U20 National Teams. He continued on to the University of Connecticut, where he completed his career with the Huskies with 42 assists, placing him third in program history. Alvarez was also named the Big East Midfielder of the Year in 2012, and helped the Huskies reach the NCAA Tournament three times.

After his career with the Huskies, Alvarez was selected second overall in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft by Chivas USA. During his MLS tenure he played for both Chivas USA and the Colorado Rapids, before signing with the USL’s San Antonio FC in 2016. Alvarez’s seven assists placed him third in the USL last season, and he also found the net four times in 30 appearances for SAFC.

"We are delighted to add Carlos to our team as part of our partnership with LAFC," said General Manager and Executive VP of Soccer Operations Oliver Wyss. "Carlos’ vast experience in MLS and USL will elevate our already talented roster and we are excited for him to showcase his incredible talent to our fans in Orange County and Los Angeles."

LAFC General Manager and Executive VP of Soccer Operations John Thorrington said team officials are thrilled to have Alvarez playing for Orange County SC this season.

“Carlos grew up here in Los Angeles, and we are excited to welcome him to OCSC as we know his development is in great hands with their leadership and coaching staff," Thorrington said. "We are confident that Carlos will not only be a great addition for OC on the field through his play but also will provide valuable leadership to the younger players we hope to sign in the near future.”
