United States news and notes

  • The United States took a 1-0 victory against Mexico on Monday evening to move one step away from claiming their third consecutive trip to the FIFA U20 World Cup.

  • Sporting Kansas City’s Erik Palmer-Brown scored the only goal of the game, highlight a standout performance that saw the U.S. limit Mexico to only three shots, none on target.

  • The victory was the first for the U.S. U20s against Mexico in a competitive game since 1986, when both Tony Meola and Kasey Keller were in the U.S. squad.

  • The United States has advanced to the final of the CONCACAF U20 Championship twice since a knockout stage was re-established for the 2009 tournament, but has never won the event. A win or a draw against El Salvador would earn the side a berth in this year's final against Honduras, which booked its place in Sunday's contest on Wednesday night with a 2-1 win against Costa Rica.

El Salvador news and notes

  • El Salvador saw its hopes of reaching the FIFA U20 World Cup for a second time falter on Wednesday night when it fell 6-1 to Mexico.

  • La Azulita will now need to take a three-goal victory against the United States on Friday to pull level on points with it and Mexico, and overturn its goal differential disadvantage.

  • El Salvador has been led in the tournament by Roberto Carlos Dominguez, who has recorded two goals, the only player with multiple tallies for the side.

  • La Azulita had previously advanced to the FIFA U20 World Cup in 2013, when the side included former Real Monarchs SLC forward Maikon Orellana.
