KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Rochester Rhinos’ leading scorer over the past two seasons signed with Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City on Monday as Christian Volesky became the latest player to make the move from the USL to MLS this offseason.

Volesky’s MLS rights were acquired by Sporting in a trade with the Portland Timbers, and the forward signed a one-year deal that also includes three option seasons through 2020. After scoring 18 goals in the past two USL regular seasons for the Rhinos, and helping the side win the 2015 USL Cup, he will now get the chance to shine in the top flight.

“Christian is a player who fits many of the characteristics we are looking for in our team,” Sporting Kansas City Manager Peter Vermes said. “He is a young, hungry player who we've followed closely over the past two years and who we feel can give us depth in a position of need.”

Volesky had previously played for FC Tucson in the PDL before joining the Rhinos ahead of the 2015 USL season. He scored a team-high eight goals and added three assists as Rochester finished atop the regular season standings and captured the 2015 USL Cup. He was the Rhinos’ top scorer again in 2016, recording 10 goals and four assists and was named the team’s Offensive Player of the Year. Volesky was one of only two players to feature in all 32 matches – including playoff contest – for Rochester last season.

During his collegiate career Volesky notched 29 goals and five assists in 73 matches, spending his first season at the University of Denver and his final three years at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He was an All-Missouri Valley Conference First Team selection in three consecutive seasons from 2012 to 2014 and was named the MVC’s 2014 Player of the Year as a senior when SIU Edwardsville reached the second round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament.
