BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Bethlehem Steel FC announced on Monday it had signed midfielder James Chambers to a multi-year contract. The signing is pending league and federation approval. Per club and league policy, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“It was an easy decision for me to be coming back,” Chambers said. “The staff and I have the same beliefs on how we both want the game to be played and that's important to me. The whole organization is going in the right direction and I want to be a part of that.”

"James displayed a technical quality and leadership abilities that we felt would benefit the growth of our club and our younger players for years to come which is why we are so happy to have him commit to our project for multiple years,” Steel Head Coach Brendan Burke said. “He is a class individual and player and one that we can now say will anchor our team for the foreseeable future."

The 29-year-old Chambers led the Steel in assists with four and finished third on the team with three goals. A set piece specialist from distance, Chambers delivered a pair of free kick goals from distance while scoring Steel FC’s final tally of the season with a diving chested goal against Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

The midfielder became the club’s third captain in its young history, taking the armband in the regular season finale against Orlando City B. Chambers is expected to continue that role ahead of the 2017 campaign. 

Prior to suiting up for the Steel, Chambers had played in Europe and helped lead St. Patrick’s Athletic F.C. to a fourth place finish in the League of Ireland Premier Division and qualify for the first round of the UEFA Europa League. He appeared in 32 games for the Pats in 2015, scoring four goals and being named to the PFAI Team of the Year. Chambers began his professional career in 2004 and has spent time at Shamrock Rovers, Hamilton Academical, Solihull Moors, Drogheda United, Shelbourne FC and Waterford United.
