Two-time USL Most Valuable Player leads Soca Warriors past Dominican Republic

COUVA, Trinidad – Two-time USL Most Valuable Player Kevin Molino scored a hat trick on Wednesday night to lead Trinidad & Tobago to a 4-0 victory against the Dominican Republic in the opening game of the final stage of 2017 Caribbean Cup Qualifying at Ato Boldon Stadium.

The Orlando City SC standout opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a volleyed finish from close range, and then doubled the Soca Warriors’ lead two minutes later as he finished off a flicked header by Kenwyne Jones after good build-up play by Cordell Cato and Daneil Cyrus.

San Jose Earthquake winger Cato added a third on the half-hour mark from another headed assist by Jones, this time from a long clearance, setting up a simple finish. Molino then completed his hat trick 15 minutes into the second half as he finished off a rebound from close range.

Trinidad & Tobago will face Martinique next Tuesday to close the round, with Martinique visiting the Dominican Republic on Saturday for its first game. The first-place team in the three-team group will earn a place at the 2017 Caribbean Cup, and also the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Elsewhere, Antigua & Barbuda and Charleston Battery defender Quinton Griffith fell 3-0 to Curacao to open its group stage, while Hurricane Matthew forced the postponement of the other two contests between Haiti and French Guiana, and Jamaica and Suriname.
