CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Battery Coach Mike Anhaeuser is excited for Wednesday night’s international exhibition with legendary Scottish club Rangers FC, and also revealed he and his team have been learning from their visitors during their 10-day stay in the Low Country over the past two weeks.

“It’s been great to have the team around,” Anhaeuser told Rangers.co.uk ahead of the game. “As a coach you are always learning every single day – just watching and trying to pick up little things that they do that you can add into your training and your sessions.”

The Battery are coming into the contest in strong form in the USL, having taken three consecutive victories after Saturday night’s win against the Richmond Kickers. The result in Wednesday’s game won’t be quite as important to the side, with both teams likely to use a wide number of players, but the Battery definitely want to make sure they give a good account of themselves against their newly-promoted visitors.

In terms of scheduling, however, the game fits nicely into the Battery’s plans as a tune-up before Saturday’s big league game against Louisville.

“The match fits pretty well because it’s on a Wednesday, so we will play Saturday then Wednesday and then Saturday again,” Anhaeuser said. “It’s like having a cup game for us and it’s not going to put us off too much. It fits well and that’s why we worked to have it on that date so it would be easier on the players. We’ll be able to play a lot of our players so they won’t get too many minutes.”

One player the Battery could see lining up against them is former United States center back Oguchi Onyewu, who has been part of the team’s camp since its arrival, and could find a place with the team as it returns to the Scottish Premier League this season.

“He has done well,” Rangers assistant manager David Weir told the Glasgow Evening Times. “I think there is a chance he will win a contract. We wouldn’t have invited him here if we didn’t think he had a chance. We’ve got until the end of the week to make our minds up. We’ll give him our thought and he will give us his thoughts and we will see where we are at. The decision has to be right for all parties.”

Weir and Anhaeuser are familiar with one another, having played college soccer in the same era. A former player for the University of Evansville, Weir was an NSCAA All-America selection in 1990, two years after Anhaeuser won the NCAA Championship with Indiana. Anhaeuser has also enjoyed getting to know current Rangers Manager Mark Warburton during the club’s stay.

“It’s exciting and it’s been great to meet Mark [Warburton],” Anhaeuser said. “It’s always great to have that for the staff and for me to be able to learn. I know the players are excited and they are all excited to be out here to watch too and possibly even one day play for them because we have a lot of young players.”

As one of nine international exhibitions being hosted by USL clubs this season, the Battery are definitely excited to take their turn in the spotlight again.

“We have a great little club in America,” Anhaeuser said. “We’ve been around for a long time, and we’ve always welcomed these teams. We hope that they are as excited as us.”
