DETROIT – Detroit City FC announced on Tuesday the signing of defender Callum Montgomery to a one-year deal ahead of the 2026 USL Championship season, with a club option for 2027. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.
Montgomery joins Le Rouge having spent the past three seasons with Cavalry FC of the Canadian Premier League. The Nanaimo, B.C. native made 68 appearances across all competitions for the club, including playing a major role in one of the club's most significant victories, a 2-1 first-round Concacaf Champions Cup win against Liga MX side Pumas UNAM last spring. The win was Cavalry’s first against an international opponent.
During the past campaign, Montgomery recorded one goal and one assist in CanPL play while also winning 99 duels at a 71.2 percent success rate, 67 aerial duels at an 81.7 percent success rate and recording 27 interceptions and 14 blocked shots.
Before returning to his home country, Montgomery spent four seasons in Major League Soccer. He was selected fourth overall in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft by FC Dallas. Montgomery spent the 2019 season on loan with FC Dallas' USL League One side North Texas SC, helping the side win the league’s inaugural title as he made 22 appearances and scored three goals across 1,958 minutes.
He was loaned to San Antonio FC prior to the start of the 2020 season and recorded nine appearances in the abbreviated campaign, scoring on his debut for the club and logging two goals overall as SAFC finished top of its division.
After the 2020 season, Montgomery's MLS rights were traded to Minnesota United FC. He was loaned to USL Championship side San Diego Loyal SC for the 2021 season in June. In 18 matches for the Western Conference side, he scored one goal in a 2-1 road victory against Orange County SC. Montgomery also made eight appearances for MLS Next Pro side Minnesota United FC 2 in 2022.
