Detroit City brings aboard young defender Tommy Silva

DETROIT — Detroit City FC announced on Thursday the club had signed defender Tommy Silva to a two-year contract through the 2027 USL Championship season and re-signed midfielder Ryan Williams to a one-year contract. The transactions are pending league and federation approval.

Silva joins DCFC having most recently competed for Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer. A native of Tucson, Ariz., Silva developed in RSL’s Academy, playing for both the Arizona and Utah branches, and signed a Homegrown Player contract ahead of the 2024 season. Over the past two seasons he predominantly played for reserve team Real Monarchs SLC in MLS NEXT Pro, logging two goals and seven assists in 45 appearances, while also making two appearances for RSL in the 2024 season in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and MLS.

The 23-year-old previously competed collegiately at UCLA, where he started 69 out of a potential 70 matches and logged nine goals and 23 assists across 5,905 minutes of soccer. Silva picked up multiple accolades with the Bruins, including the United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Region Second Team in 2023, Pac-12 All-Conference Second Team in 2021, 2022, and 2023, Pac-12 All-Conference Team honorable mention in 2020-21.

Williams re-signs with Detroit having made 55 appearances for Le Rouge across all competitions, logging two goals and one assist. In the USL Championship over the past two seasons, the 34-year-old ranked first on the team winning 69 tackles at a 67.7 success rate, second in recoveries with 205 and fourth with 32 chances created.

Before joining Detroit City, Williams spent three seasons with Swedish side AFC Eskilstuna. Across 50 games played for the second-tier Swedish side, Williams picked up one goal and one assist across 3,536 minutes played. He also previously competed for Ottawa Fury FC and Hartford Athletic in the USL Championship and has recorded eight goals and five assists in 91 career appearances in the league across the regular season and playoffs.
