TULSA, Okla. – FC Tulsa announced on Friday the club had signed goalkeeper Alex Tambakis ahead of the 2026 USL Championship season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.
Tambakis joins the Scissortails after spending the past five seasons with New Mexico United, where he continued to build one of the leading goalkeeping careers in the USL Championship’s history. The 33-year-old recorded 134 regular season appearances for United, logging 343 saves and 32 shutouts in 12,027 minutes of action to move into the league’s all-time lead in saves and shutouts, helping United finish top of the Western Conference in the 2024 season.
A native of Athens, Greece, Tambakis enters the 2026 season having recorded 661 regular season saves while logging 58 shutouts, tied with retired goalkeeper Evan Newton and current Sacramento Republic FC goalkeeper Danny Vitiello for the all-time lead in the latter category.
“Alex is a standard-setter, and a top goalkeeper in the league,” said FC Tulsa Sporting Director and General Manager Caleb Sewell. “He’s a legendary figure in this league because of how consistently he performs and how much trust he brings to the group in front of him. His experience, leadership, and mentality raise everyone’s level, and we’re excited to bring that presence to Tulsa.”
Prior to joining New Mexico United, Tambakis spent three seasons with North Carolina FC in the USL Championship after two seasons on loan with Charleston Battery from Atlanta United FC of Major League Soccer. His best season to date came in 2019 for NCFC, where he logged 91 saves at a save percentage of 75.2 percent and notched a 1.03 goals-against average and -7.31 goals prevented mark.
