In the build-up to his first official start for Louisville City FC in the USL Jägermeister Cup this past June, the comparisons to some of the players that had preceded him in making their debut for the club’s First Team were going to be inevitable for defender Brandon Dayes.
After all, at the age of 16 years, 6 months and 12 days old, he was going to become the second-youngest player to appear for the club in official competition.
What the Louisville native delivered on June 29 at Lynn Family Stadium, though, was a 55-minute performance that highlighted why he’d earned the opportunity to come into the lineup.
Playing on the right side of the defensive back three, he won 2 of 2 duels, made four clearances and won his lone contested tackle before giving way to the experience of Sean Totsch, who helped close out a 1-0 win.
“He showed up on game day like he does to training every day,” said LouCity Head Coach Danny Cruz postgame of his young protégé. “Calm, cool and collected. Same again today. It was a big moment for him, but he handled it the way we expected he would.”
If that was the prelude, what’s coming next for the Louisville native – who on Thursday turned pro with his hometown club – is going to be worth watching.
SOCCER IN THE BLOOD: Given his background, Dayes’ emergence shouldn’t come as a surprise. The son of longtime University of Louisville Women’s Soccer Head Coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes and former University of Cincinnati Men’s Head Coach Hylton Dayes, the young defender has been around the game his entire life.
EARNING HIS STRIPES: As with many of LouCity’s Academy products, Dayes got his first chance at First Team action in one of the club’s annual international exhibitions. He saw his first action against the Bundesliga’s Eintracht Frankfurt as a 15-year-old during in July, 2024, while also appearing against Mexican club FC Cancun later in the year.
STEPPING UP: Graduating to First Team action, though, is a whole other deal. After making his competitive debut against North Carolina, Dayes went on to make 10 appearances in the USL Championship this season, including starts away at two of the tougher road trips in the league; at Indy Eleven in the LIPAFC, one of the fiercest rivalries in the league, and at Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, illustrating Cruz’s trust in the young talent.
Now, Dayes is making the next step, becoming the seventh Academy player to graduate to a professional contract from LouCity’s Academy since 2024 USL Championship Young Player of the Year Elijah Wynder led the way five years ago.
“It is a testament to the organization and the belief that we all have in our pathway here at Louisville City,” said Cruz in the club’s statement. “This season I watched Brandon thrive in an environment that challenged him every single day. He rose to that challenge and his growth this season has been a joy to watch.
“We are excited to continue pushing him in his development and we know that he wouldn’t want it to be any other way. He is a great kid with a great family that is aligned with our values here at Louisville City.”
While there have been numerous young talents emerge from the USL Championship over the past five years, few clubs have been as prolific as LouCity when it comes to homegrown products. From Elijah and Joshua Wynder – who Dayes sits second to as the youngest player to appear for the club in official competition – to current midfielder Carlos Moguel Jr. and Owen Damm – now thriving at FC Tulsa – the perennial contender has provided big opportunities to Louisville young talent.
As Dayes heads into his first full professional campaign next spring, all signs point to him becoming one of the young talents currently in the USL Championship for whom the sky is the limit.
At one of the highest-profile clubs in the league, he seems ready to embrace that opportunity.
