Detroit City FC announces initial roster decisions for 2026 season

DETROIT – Detroit City FC announced on Monday its initial roster moves of the offseason, with at least 13 players set to return for the 2026 USL Championship season at Keyworth Stadium.

The club announced it had signed longtime forward Connor Rutz to a new contract through the 2027 season, and that it had exercised its contract option for defender Haruki Yamazaki, while also announcing the retirement of longtime defender Steven Carroll, who will join the club’s front office.

Le Rouge will also return goalkeepers Carlos Herrera and Carlos Saldaña, defenders Devon Amoo-Mensah, Michael Bryant and Shane Weidt, midfielders Abdoulaye Diop, Marcello Polisi and Rhys Williams and forward Ben Morris and Darren Smith, all of whom were previously under contract for the 2026 season, while Bilal Obeid will return as a USL Academy signing.

The club is also in contract discussions with midfielders Jeciel Cedeño, Kobe Hernandez-Foster and Ryan Williams and forward Ates Diouf.

The club also announced the departure of Jay Chapman, Dom Gasso, Sebastian Guenzatti, Tatenda Mkuruva and Alex Villanueva as free agents, and the return of Jordan Adebayo-Smith to Minnesota United FC and Isaiah LeFlore to the Philadelphia Union at the conclusion of their loan periods, while defender Matt Sheldon announced his retirement from professional soccer.

Detroit City FC continues negotiations to sign other players, with further announcements expected in the coming weeks.
