All season we’ve been waiting for the promise of Rhode Island FC’s attack to realize its potential.
Over the past three games – including Saturday night’s 5-0 shellacking of the Tampa Bay Rowdies – it’s finally appeared, just in time to put the defending Eastern Conference title-holders on the verge of the postseason.
There was JJ Williams, who has bagged four goals and one assist over that span, continuing to be the straw that stirs the drink in the final third for RIFC. He went into Saturday as the highest-rated forward in terms of Goals Added per 96 minutes and only boosted that stock further against his former club.
But there was also Noah Fuson, notching a goal and assist, giving him goal contributions in three consecutive games. For last season’s Golden Playmaker as the league’s assists leader, this year has been a leaner one – as it has for most of RIFC’s lineup until the past three weeks – but now it’s starting to fire again.
“For him, I think one of the biggest things was to see the ball hit the back of the net,” Williams told The Blazing Musket on Fuson. “Once it does, all that happened earlier in the season, all the rough patches that you have, they kind of get forgiven and forgotten.
“I think that that’s kind of the biggest part for him is, how he was going to not just follow up that form, but get into those really good spots that he was finding last year, and doing that consistently and often. I think that where he is right now, especially seeing the ball hit the back of the net last week, he’s back.”
Albert Dikwa also chipped in a goal and assist, while Maxi Rodriguez added the exclamation point late on as RIFC posted its sixth-highest Expected Goals mark in a game in its short history. RIFC has now notched more than one-third of its goals this regular season in the past three games, earning 13 points from a possible 15 to sit as the second-hottest team in the league behind Louisville City, a similar run to the form the side showed in closing out the 2024 regular season.
It's too early for Williams to make that comparison, but RIFC’s run has given fans liberty to dare to dream of another postseason run.
“For me, in the big picture, I don’t think we’ve done anything at all,” he said. “You can say last year, but it doesn’t mean anything until you do it this year. We just had a great performance, but it doesn’t mean anything until we lift some hardware.”
Here are this week’s rankings.

Summary |
|
| 1 | ![]() |
Louisville City FC (21-1-6) Week 33: @ OC |
![]() Last Week: 1 |
How fitting was it that Brian Ownby scored the goal that clinched the eighth piece of silverware he’s won at LouCity? Great way to notch his 40th regular season goal in the Championship. |
| 2 | ![]() |
Hartford Athletic (13-10-5) Week 33: @ TBR |
![]() Last Week: 2 |
It looked like Hartford had a hangover from its USL Jagermeister Cup Final win in the first half in Oakland, but the side ended up with a six-point week. A home playoff game beckons. |
| 3 | ![]() |
FC Tulsa (15-5-8) Week 33: @ ELP |
![]() Last Week: 3 |
Tyler Deric was an emergency signing, but he’s been excellent stepping into the breach for Johan Peñaranda so far. Great performance against San Antonio on Saturday in another win. |
| 4 | ![]() |
El Paso Locomotive FC (10-8-10) Week 33: vs. TUL |
3Last Week: 7 |
With Jahmali Waite on international duty, Sebastián Mora-More stepped in and stepped up for Locomotive with a six-save performance. A home playoff game is back within reach. |
| 5 | ![]() |
New Mexico United (13-10-5) Week 33: vs. OAK |
1Last Week: 4 |
New Mexico was left frustrated by its 3-3 draw against Orange County, and rightly so. That was a bit of a letdown defensively after clinching a playoff berth. |
| 6 | ![]() |
Charleston Battery (17-5-4) Week 33: vs. COS; vs. DET |
1Last Week: 5 |
The Battery have got four games to play across the final 13 days of the season after Saturday’s abandoned contest but are locked into the No. 2 seed in the East. That should allow for plenty of rotation. |
| 7 | ![]() |
Rhode Island FC (10-11-7) Week 33: @ NC |
2Last Week: 9 |
What is it about home finales for Rhode Island FC? That’s the second consecutive year they’ve blasted a team from the state of Florida to wrap up the home slate, and now the playoffs beckon. |
| 8 | ![]() |
Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (11-10-7) Week 33: @ MB |
2Last Week: 10 |
The Hounds’ resilience ensured their eighth consecutive trip to the playoffs. Saturday’s win was the fifth time out of the past six instances the side has rebounded from a loss with a victory. |
| 9 | ![]() |
Sacramento Republic FC (12-7-8) Week 33: @ LEX |
3Last Week: 6 |
Defeat in Hartford is going to sting a little with the way it came about, but Republic FC was really good for long spells and should come away feeling confident for the final stretch. |
| 10 | ![]() |
Loudoun United FC (12-10-6) Week 33: @ IND |
2Last Week: 12 |
Welcome to the playoffs, Loudoun United. It’s been a bit more uphill in the second half of the season, but the visitors earned their win in Detroit. |
| 11 | ![]() |
Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (9-11-7) Week 33: @ CHS; vs. LV |
![]() Last Week: 11 |
The Switchbacks need to find something positive out of Monday evening’s reset against Charleston. The pressure’s back on after Phoenix’s victory. |
| 12 | ![]() |
San Antonio FC (10-10-7) Week 33: @ OC; @ PHX |
2Last Week: 14 |
Yes, SAFC hasn’t scored in its last three outings, but it took a six-save display by Tulsa’s Tyler Deric to deny them on Saturday. We liked what we saw, if not the outcome. |
| 13 | ![]() |
Phoenix Rising FC (8-8-12) Week 33: vs. SA |
6Last Week: 19 |
Finally, a complete 90-minute performance from Rising. Collin Smith’s move into a more advanced position paid off handsomely, this is what we want to see to close out a playoff place. |
| 14 | ![]() |
North Carolina FC (12-11-5) Week 33: vs. RI |
6Last Week: 8 |
NCFC has won once in its last five games and has slid to fifth place in the East. The playoffs are right around the corner, but it might be a short-lived trip if they keep playing the way they did on Friday. |
| 15 | ![]() |
Lexington SC (9-11-8) Week 33: vs. SAC |
![]() Last Week: 15 |
Three consecutive defeats have taken Lexington from a potential top-four finish to battling for a playoff place again. Friday’s game against Sacramento is going to be no easy task. |
| 16 | ![]() |
Indy Eleven (9-14-5) Week 33: vs. LDN |
![]() Last Week: 16 |
The Boys in Blue have come out on the short end of the two real six-pointers they’ve faced in the past five games against Rhode Island and Pittsburgh. That’s a recipe for missing the playoffs. |
| 17 | ![]() |
Detroit City FC (9-11-8) Week 33: @ CHS |
![]() Last Week: 17 |
Le Rouge didn’t record a shot in the first half and ended the night with just 0.17xG while failing to record a shot on target. Poor performance, but at least Indy and Tampa Bay also lost. |
| 18 | ![]() |
Orange County SC (8-11-8) Week 33: vs. SA; vs. LOU |
2Last Week: 20 |
Great attacking display in New Mexico, but once against OCSC’s defense went missing. That’s a useful point but the nine-game winless streak goes. Wednesday’s game against San Antonio is crucial. |
| 19 | ![]() |
Birmingham Legion FC (5-11-12) Week 33: vs. MIA |
1Last Week: 18 |
Legion had the weekend off before its Sunday evening contest against Miami FC. It’s going to be important to end the season on a strong note. |
| 20 | ![]() |
Tampa Bay Rowdies (8-14-6) Week 33: vs. HFD |
7Last Week: 13 |
Head Coach Dominic Casciato summed it up – “We let ourselves down tonight.” That’s surely it for the Rowdies’ playoff chances after conceding five goals for the first time since 2018. |
| 21 | ![]() |
Miami FC (6-16-6) Week 33: @ BHM |
![]() Last Week: 21 |
Miami put up a decent resistance in Louisville before finally capitulating late on. It would move level on points with Birmingham with victory on Sunday evening. |
| 22 | ![]() |
Oakland Roots SC (7-14-7) Week 33: @ NM |
![]() Last Week: 22 |
The past week summed up Roots’ season. Two games in which the side held the lead, and only one point to show for it. They’re now tied for the most points dropped in the league this season (22). |
| 23 | ![]() |
Monterey Bay FC (7-14-7) Week 33: vs. PIT |
![]() Last Week: 23 |
As of writing, Monterey Bay is still mathematically alive in the playoff race. That could change before kickoff against Pittsburgh on Saturday. |
| 24 | ![]() |
Las Vegas Lights FC (6-14-8) Week 33: @ COS |
![]() Last Week: 24 |
Fair play to the Lights, who were eliminated from contention on Saturday but still rallied to earn a draw against Oakland behind Johnny Rodriguez’s goal and assist. |
