Lexington is putting the pieces together for a top-four bid in the Western Conference

So, what was going through Joe Hafferty’s mind as he cut toward the near post for Kieran Sargeant’s low cross in stoppage time on Saturday night?

“Don’t miss,” Hafferty said with a laugh.

Good news for Hafferty and his Lexington SC teammates, he didn’t. The 27-year-old’s second goal of the season lifted LSC to a 2-1 win against Oakland Roots SC, its third consecutive victory in league play.

That run – and the move into fifth place in the Western Conference that it’s delivered – has come through a combination of faith and confidence that’s been building within the Championship newcomer this season. Hafferty knew where to be, because that’s the way it’s supposed to work when everything’s clicking for Lexington in the final third.

“All the work’s been done at that point,” he added. “Just make contact and trust my teammates. I saw Kieran making the run, I knew he was going to get there. He’s quick. He gets to the end zone all the time, so just got to trust my teammates to be at the right spot and the rest will take care of itself.”

After the euphoria of its opening night win to the lengthy winless streak that followed, Lexington’s had to come through plenty to reach this point. Over its last nine games in the league, Head Coach Terry Boss’ squad has got a 6-1-2 record – only the Charleston Battery have won more games since June 13 – and a real chance at not just a first trip to the postseason but a home game when November arrives.

There’s still plenty of work to do over the final nine weeks of the regular season, but the plan is starting to pay off consistently.

“We know how we want to play,” said Hafferty. “We try to execute it. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. It worked out that time and I was in the right place, right time.”

Here are this week’s rankings.

Summary

1 Louisville City FC
(14-1-6)
Week 26: @ IND

Last Week:
1
LouCity had enough chances, but not enough execution against New Mexico United. The lead’s back to one point ahead of the Battery.
2 FC Tulsa
(12-3-6)
Week 26: @ COS

Last Week:
2
Tulsa’s undefeated streak in league play is a season-best 14 games. The Scissortails needed to be more clinical in the first half but did enough for all three points.
3 Charleston Battery
(15-4-2)
Week 26: @ RI
1
Last Week:
4
The Battery have won nine in a row at home and essentially locked up a top-two finish with their win against Loudoun. It could go down to the wire for the Players’ Shield.
4 Hartford Athletic
(7-8-5)
Week 26: @ NC
2
Last Week:
6
The level of excitement around Hartford Athletic is at all-time highs. Semifinal place in the USL Jägermeister Cup, a big win in El Clamico, the confidence is shining through.
5 Sacramento Republic FC
(8-5-7)
Week 26: @ NM
2
Last Week:
3
Republic FC got through to the USL Jägermeister Cup Semifinals but then got pegged back by El Paso Locomotive. The travel might start catching up in the next couple of weeks.
6 North Carolina FC
(10-7-3)
Week 26: vs. HFD
2
Last Week:
8
Some results, you take and move on. NCFC’s win in Las Vegas wasn’t too convincing, though, and they’ll need to be better at home to Hartford.
7 Lexington SC
(7-7-7)
Week 26: @ LV
3
Last Week:
10
LSC is averaging more than two points per game over its last eight league outings. Terrific comeback against Oakland, but one that on balance was certainly deserved.
8 Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC
(7-7-7)
Week 26: @ TBR
1
Last Week:
7
The Hounds keep plodding toward the playoffs with a point on the road in Birmingham. It’s fine, but it was a missed opportunity to close on the top four.
9 El Paso Locomotive FC
(8-5-7)
Week 26: @ PHX
3
Last Week:
12
Republic FC had an arduous week of travel and Locomotive took full advantage. It wasn’t a flashy win on Saturday, but it got the job done.
10 Orange County SC
(8-8-3)
Week 26: vs. BHM
5
Last Week:
5
OCSC was impressively game despite being down to 10 players in Tulsa for most of the contest. The bad news is the weekend’s results were not good for their top-four aspirations.
11 Detroit City FC
(7-7-7)
Week 26: vs. SA
4
Last Week:
15
Le Rouge got out to a great start against Tampa Bay and then saw things home comfortably. Is it a good or a bad sign that Kobe Hernandez-Foster’s already tied for the team assist lead?
12 Loudoun United FC
(9-8-4)
Week 26: vs. MIA
3
Last Week:
9
Loudoun deserved better against Republic FC in the USL Jägermeister Cup but then gave up too many easy chances in Charleston. The playoffs are still basically a lock, but top four is looking shakier.
13 Phoenix Rising FC
(7-7-7)
Week 26: vs. ELP
6
Last Week:
19
Rising came through its six-pointer against the Switchbacks with flying colors to get back in the win column. They need to take advantage of this run of home games.
14 San Antonio FC
(8-7-5)
Week 26: @ DET

Last Week:
14
Including Wednesday’s USL Jägermeister Cup game, San Antonio hasn’t scored in three consecutive games. They’re still in the top four, but that’s not going to last with the way things are moving.
15 New Mexico United
(8-8-3)
Week 26: vs. SAC
3
Last Week:
18
A point on the road at the toughest place to visit in the league is something to build on. Another big test this weekend at home to Sacramento awaits.
16 Oakland Roots SC
(6-11-3)
Week 26: vs. MB
5
Last Week:
11
Roots made the ideal start in Lexington with Peter Wilson’s fourth goal in as many games. Unfortunately, that was one of only two shots the side took all game as Lexington rallied for victory.
17 Indy Eleven
(6-9-5)
Week 26: vs. LOU
6
Last Week:
23
Jack Blake continues to do work for the Boys in Blue. That was a win they had to have at home to Miami, putting them back above the playoff line to end the losing run.
18 Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC
(6-8-6)
Week 26: vs. TUL
5
Last Week:
13
If you want an exhibit on how important Matt Mahoney is to the Switchbacks, just watch Saturday’s game. Colorado Springs allowed a season-high 10 shots on target and a 2.79 Expected Goals Against mark.
19 Tampa Bay Rowdies
(5-12-3)
Week 26: vs. PIT
3
Last Week:
16
The Rowdies had taken only two shots when they went two goals behind in Detroit. That’s not going to work for a team that’s only taken 10 points from 12 road games.
20 Rhode Island FC
(5-10-6)
Week 26: vs. CHS
3
Last Week:
17
RIFC made it through to the USL Jägermeister Cup Semifinals thanks to playing a team even more out of sorts than they are right now. After Saturday’s loss in Hartford, they’ve still only gained two points after conceding first this season.
21 Monterey Bay FC
(6-10-6)
Week 26: @ OAK

Last Week:
21
MBFC is only three points behind the two teams directly above the playoff line in the West. They’ve also played three games more than both New Mexico and Orange County.
22 Birmingham Legion FC
(4-9-8)
Week 26: @ OC
2
Last Week:
20
Legion couldn’t take advantage of its massive slice of good fortune against Pittsburgh. Ronaldo Damus is heading toward another double-digit scoring season, but he’s accounted for 37.5 percent of the team’s goals in league play.
23 Las Vegas Lights FC
(5-11-5)
Week 26: vs. LEX
1
Last Week:
22
The Lights couldn’t catch a break at home to North Carolina FC. We still think there’s promise here, but the rest of the weekend’s results didn’t help.
24 Miami FC
(5-11-5)
Week 26: @ LDN

Last Week:
24
Francisco Bonfiglio could win the Golden Boot for a last-place club at this rate. Does that make him the next Milan Iloski?
