Louisville City’s attack is flying again, and on Saturday made club history

With everything Louisville City has accomplished over its first decade, especially in front of goal, it’s still capable of achieving new landmarks.

Saturday night’s 4-2 victory against Miami FC brought another club first, as Phillip Goodrum and Co. recorded four goals for a third consecutive outing in league play, the first time a LouCity side has accomplished that feat in the USL Championship.

That it came in a performance where LouCity felt it needed to grind out a performance in the humidity of Pitbull Stadium speaks to the run the club’s attack is currently on, with Goodrum front and center.

“No game in this league is easy – ever,” said Goodrum. “I think that was on full display tonight, but it was a resilient performance from us in the end. I thought we could have been better, honestly, quality-wise, but in the end, we’ll take a 4-2 win on turf away in a hot, humid environment.”

The 28-year-old – acquired last year for a USL Championship-record fee from FC Tulsa – bagged two goals to reach 60 regular season tallies for his career. That gave him four goals out of the 12 LouCity has scored over the past three outings, and the lead in the Golden Boot race with 12 tallies overall in the regular season.

Joining Goodrum with four goals in the past three is Jansen Wilson, who has broken out to join Ray Serrano on six tallies this regular season.

Saturday night might not have been vintage LouCity according to the players or Head Coach Danny Cruz, but it was another big step forward as the team builds momentum toward claiming a second consecutive Players’ Shield.

“These games are usually not pretty,” said Cruz. “Tonight was a classic example of that. At the same time, I think it showed really, really good character tonight in the second half to make sure we’re walking out of here with three points. Not our prettiest moment, or prettiest three points, but these games on the road are often about the grind and about the mentality. I thought [in] the second half [we] certainly showed that.”

Here are this week’s rankings.

Summary

1 Louisville City FC
(14-1-5)
Week 25: vs. NM

Last Week:
1
We’ve mentioned the sort of weapon Josh Jones’ long throw-ins have become for LouCity, and Saturday was more evidence with Phillip Goodrum the big beneficiary.
2 FC Tulsa
(11-3-6)
Week 25: vs. OC

Last Week:
2
Probably a fair result for Tulsa against Hartford, but they needed to test Antony Siaha more consistently in the Athletic net. Only one shot on target isn’t going to cut it, generally.
3 Sacramento Republic FC
(8-4-7)
Week 25: @ ELP

Last Week:
3
Want an illustration of how rivalry games are different? Saturday night was the first time Sacramento had conceded three goals across all competitions this season.
4 Charleston Battery
(14-4-2)
Week 25: vs. LDN

Last Week:
4
The Battery’s comeback win at Highmark was their first in Pittsburgh since 2018. Terrific response to last weekend’s setback.
5 Orange County SC
(8-7-3)
Week 25: @ TUL
1
Last Week:
6
Orange County’s four-game undefeated streak is its longest of the season, and it’s moved the side to the doorstep of the top four in the West.
6 Hartford Athletic
(6-8-5)
Week 25: vs. RI
2
Last Week:
8
Hartford kept its momentum going with a draw against Tulsa, and they’re going to be feeling upset-minded as they head to San Antonio on Wednesday night.
7 Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC
(7-7-6)
Week 25: @ BHM
2
Last Week:
5
The Hounds twice took the lead against Charleston this season and twice came out on the wrong side of the final score. Disappointing end to the undefeated streak.
8 North Carolina FC
(9-7-3)
Week 25: @ LV
1
Last Week:
7
NCFC didn’t really do enough to break down a good Detroit back line after Le Rouge got their equalizer on Friday night. Back to fourth after Loudoun’s victory.
9 Loudoun United FC
(9-7-4)
Week 25: @ CHS
3
Last Week:
12
Few teams needed a win more than Loudoun this weekend. Now they’ve broken their lengthy winless streak in time for a huge clash with Sacramento in the USL Jägermeister Cup.
10 Lexington SC
(6-7-7)
Week 25: vs. OAK
3
Last Week:
13
We wondered last week if Lexington’s victory against Phoenix was the start of another run. It was, and if LSC had been better in front of goal it could easily have been more lopsided.
11 Oakland Roots SC
(6-10-3)
Week 25: @ LEX
4
Last Week:
15
Oakland deserved a result on the road in Sacramento, but now they need to take that performance and repeat it consistently. If they do, the gap to the playoff places will come down quickly.
12 El Paso Locomotive FC
(7-5-7)
Week 25: vs. SAC
1
Last Week:
11
Christian Sorto was excellent, but Locomotive gave up too many good chances and ended up paying the price in the end. Missed opportunity.
13 Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC
(6-7-6)
Week 25: @ PHX
4
Last Week:
9
Step back for the Switchbacks, which didn’t create enough to earn a result. This Saturday’s game in Phoenix is a proper six-pointer.
14 San Antonio FC
(8-7-4)
Week 25: @ MB
4
Last Week:
10
San Antonio got held scoreless at home for the first time this season, which made the halftime presentation of Santiago Patiño all the more timely. It needs to be better.
15 Detroit City FC
(6-7-7)
Week 25: vs. TBR
1
Last Week:
16
Kobe Hernandez-Foster has fit seamlessly into Detroit’s midfield over his first three appearances. Really great move by the club that has helped stabilize things.
16 Tampa Bay Rowdies
(5-11-3)
Week 25: @ DET
2
Last Week:
14
It’s been a frustrating season on the whole for Manuel Arteaga, which likely explained his celebration after equalizing against Phoenix on Saturday.
17 Rhode Island FC
(5-9-6)
Week 25: @ HFD

Last Week:
17
RIFC got the weekend off, useful as it gets to prepare for its USL Jägermeister Cup Quarterfinal on Wednesday night against Birmingham Legion. Time to step up.
18 New Mexico United
(8-8-2)
Week 25: @ LOU
1
Last Week:
19
Everything looked like it was falling apart again for New Mexico until Thomas Amang’s late equalizer against Las Vegas. It’s not a win, but it’s certainly something.
19 Phoenix Rising FC
(6-7-7)
Week 25: vs. COS
2
Last Week:
21
Pierce Rizzo becoming the youngest goalscorer in Rising history is the story from Saturday, but his overall performance showed why he’s made five consecutive starts.
20 Birmingham Legion FC
(4-9-7)
Week 25: vs. PIT

Last Week:
20
The USL Jägermeister Cup has brought out the best in Legion this season. They’re going to need that to earn a first win against Rhode Island FC on Wednesday.
21 Monterey Bay FC
(6-10-5)
Week 25: vs. SA
1
Last Week:
22
Monterey Bay deserved its result in El Paso, now it’s got to find a way back into the win column with the fewest games remaining of any team in the West.
22 Las Vegas Lights FC
(5-10-5)
Week 25: vs. NC
1
Last Week:
23
The Lights hopes of a first win for Devin Rensing were dashed by New Mexico’s late equalizer, but there were more good signs here. The next two home games are an opportunity.
23 Indy Eleven
(5-9-5)
Week 25: vs. MIA
5
Last Week:
18
Indy has lost four in a row in league play for the first time since 2022 and has dropped a league-high 17 points from winning positions this season. That’s not postseason form.
24 Miami FC
(5-10-5)
Week 25: @ IND

Last Week:
24
Miami’s winless streak is at eight games in league play. They didn’t play badly against Louisville, but they continue to leak goals too easily at times.
