In the grand scheme of things, Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC has generally got what it deserved from its performances this season.
Yes, there have been games where the side deserved more, but that’s been balanced out with results that might have come somewhat more fortuitously.
As it stands, though, the defending USL Championship title-holders sit with a minus-1-goal differential on a -0.12 Expected Goal Differential, and an almost even 5-6-6 record with a 23.53 Expected Points mark to sit ninth in the Western Conference.
That made Friday night’s comfortable 3-1 victory against Lexington SC a reason for positive feelings around Weidner Field, but a sense that there was still much more to be done to secure a fifth consecutive postseason berth.
“We could have had more,” said Switchbacks Head Coach James Chambers. “Look, we know we created chances throughout the year, and we’ve given up soft goals. We can see that, if I’m being honest, but we're pleased with the boys that they’re getting the reward now. But again, we've got to stay humble, and we've got to keep working. It’s two league wins and that’s all it is.”
The good news for the Switchbacks? The homefield advantage that Weidner Field has provided since its opening could carry the side over the final three months of the season. After a critical trip to Oakland Roots SC on Saturday night, Colorado Springs will play eight of its final 12 games of the regular season on home turf.
Having racked up a 46-17-17 home record with a +58-goal differential across the regular season and playoffs in the Championship since the start of the 2021 campaign – the most home wins of any team in the West and fourth overall – this is the moment for the Switchbacks to turn it on.
Sitting only five points out of the top four in the muddled Western Conference standings, the surge that carried Colorado Springs all the way to the summit last year could put it in contention to challenge again.
Here are this week’s rankings.

| 2 | ![]() |
Louisville City FC (12-1-5) Week 23: @ CHS |
![]() Last Week: 2 |
LouCity’s daring style sometimes exposes it – as seen in Oalex Anderson’s goal on Saturday – but the rewards it offers makes the side tremendous to watch on top of the results. |
| 3 | ![]() |
Sacramento Republic FC (7-4-6) Week 23: vs. MB |
![]() Last Week: 3 |
Republic FC’s defensive adjustments and substitutions turned the tide in San Antonio. That’s 13 out of a possible 15 points in the last five league games. |
| 4 | ![]() |
FC Tulsa (9-3-5) Week 23: @ MB; vs NM |
![]() Last Week: 4 |
Tulsa is becoming very good at this comeback lark. The Scissortails have earned 13 points from losing positions this season, tied for second-most in the league. |
| 5 | ![]() |
Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (7-6-5) Week 23: vs. OC |
4Last Week: 9 |

| 6 | ![]() |
Orange County SC (7-7-2) Week 23: @ PIT |
6Last Week: 12 |
Consecutive four-goal performances in the league and three consecutive wins overall, OCSC is heading in a great direction. Chris Hegardt’s consecutive Player of the Game performances in the league have been great. |
| 7 | ![]() |
El Paso Locomotive FC (7-5-5) Week 23: @ MIA |
4Last Week: 11 |
Yes, the Lights are floundering right now, but El Paso made them pay emphatically. Great moments to see Emiliano Rodriguez score his first goal and Kenneth Hoban make his debut. |
| 8 | ![]() |
North Carolina FC (8-7-2) Week 23: vs. TBR |
2Last Week: 6 |
NCFC couldn’t keep up with LouCity in the second half at Lynn Family Stadium. They’ve got the team and set-up to challenge Louisville but must be prepared to go toe-to-toe for 90 minutes. |
| 9 | ![]() |
San Antonio FC (8-6-3) Week 23: @ LV |
2Last Week: 7 |
Two consecutive weekends where San Antonio’s come undone late defensively. That’s not great in the long-term, giving Republic FC the head-to-head tiebreaker for postseason seeding. |
| 10 | ![]() |
Hartford Athletic (4-8-4) Week 23: vs. MIA; @ BHM |
6Last Week: 16 |
We’ve said it multiple times now – when Hartford is good, it can be absolutely tremendous. Athletic might still be in last in the East, but they’re now within three points of a playoff spot. |
| 11 | ![]() |
New Mexico United (8-7-1) Week 23: @ TUL |
6Last Week: 5 |
United hasn’t been enjoying its trips to the Eastern time zone of late. Since beating Miami in March, New Mexico is 0-3-0 and has been outscored 7-1 when it heads across the Mississippi River. |
| 12 | ![]() |
Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (5-6-6) Week 23: @ OAK |
6Last Week: 18 |
The Switchbacks have won three in a row across all competitions and have scored seven goals in the last two. They're right back in contention for a playoff spot, and potentially more. |
| 13 | ![]() |
Loudoun United FC (8-7-3) Week 23: @ RI |
![]() Last Week: 13 |
Loudoun has been the comeback king of the USL Championship this season, but the tide’s turning. They’ve dropped five points from winning positions in their last two league outings having not dropped any in their first 15 games. |
| 14 | ![]() |
Tampa Bay Rowdies (5-10-2) Week 23: @ NC |
6Last Week: 20 |
The Rowdies seem to have some kind of hex over Indy Eleven. A second 3-1 victory this season has their undefeated streak in the series at 10 games with six victories and a +13-goal differential. |
| 15 | ![]() |
Indy Eleven (5-7-5) Week 23: @ DET |
7Last Week: 8 |
The Boys in Blue had their chances but couldn’t hit the mark against Tampa Bay. Two shots on target in 17 shots overall was everything you needed to know about this performance. |
| 16 | ![]() |
Oakland Roots SC (6-9-2) Week 23: vs. COS |
1Last Week: 17 |
Roots dropped a position in the standings in their week off but certainly look good by comparison with their current run of form. Saturday’s game against Colorado Springs is a proper playoff six-pointer. |
| 17 | ![]() |
Birmingham Legion FC (4-8-7) Week 23: vs. HFD |
2Last Week: 15 |
Legion looked like a disaster for half-an-hour in Phoenix, then did enough to earn all three points with their heightened intensity and quality, only to settle for a draw late. Great game to watch, but not what Birmingham needed. |
| 18 | ![]() |
Phoenix Rising FC (6-6-6) Week 23: @ LEX |
8Last Week: 10 |
Rising’s leaky defense is back, and that’s a problem. Seven goals against in the past week has the side back to second in goals against in the league. As good as the attack is, it won’t be able to keep up. |
| 19 | ![]() |
Lexington SC (4-7-7) Week 23: vs. PHX |
5Last Week: 14 |
Lexington’s showed us how to flip a six-game undefeated streak into a four-game winless streak in double-quick time. They can’t have any complaints about how Friday’s trip to Colorado Springs turned out. |
| 20 | ![]() |
Miami FC (5-8-4) Week 23: @ HFD: vs. ELP |
1Last Week: 21 |
Miami couldn’t quite hold on in Pittsburgh for a needed win but Francisco Bonfiglio continues to shine. The 23-year-old Argentine has tied the club’s single-season scoring record in the USL-C with 13 games to play. |
| 21 | ![]() |
Detroit City FC (5-6-6) Week 23: @ RI; vs. IND |
1Last Week: 22 |
Le Rouge had a week to recuperate and incorporate its new arrival. This week’s double-matchday is a crucial one. |
| 22 | ![]() |
Rhode Island FC (4-9-5) Week 23: vs. DET; vs. LDN |
3Last Week: 19 |
JJ Williams’ red card was a foolish moment in a night to forget for RIFC. Despite his return, that’s three consecutive league games without a win and a crucial midweek contest at home to Detroit up next. |
| 23 | ![]() |
Monterey Bay FC (6-8-4) Week 23: vs. TUL; @ SAC |
1Last Week: 24 |
Monterey Bay is still above the playoff line. Facing the top two teams in the West over four days this week might finally put paid to that. |
| 24 | ![]() |
Las Vegas Lights FC (5-10-3) Week 23: vs. SA |
1Last Week: 23 |
The Lights have conceded 14 goals over the past three league outings. That’s more than Sacramento Republic FC has allowed all season. Brutal stuff. |
