Lexington’s winning streak has put it on the verge of a move into the playoff positions out West

Over its first 12 games of the season, things were not going well for Lexington SC at either end of the field.

While there were problems in the attacking penalty area, more crucially, the side was leaking goals, and that was costing the side results. With 20 goals conceded, LSC was at a minus-9 goal differential, compared to -3.69 Expected Goal Differential through the 2-1 loss against Monterey Bay FC on June 7.

Since then, things have taken a turn for the positive for Head Coach Terry Boss’ side, with goalkeeper Brooks Thompson playing a key part. The 23-year-old posted his first shutout in the regular season on Friday night in a 1-0 win against Phoenix Rising FC, but his shot-stopping numbers have been a notable upgrade on prior starter Logan Ketterer.

In four appearances, Thompson has already accrued a -1.85 Goals Prevented mark, logging 10 saves and a save percentage of 69.2%. Compare that to the 56.1 percent mark Ketterer posted over his 11 appearances and a +0.47 Goals Prevented mark and the difference Thompson has made in three consecutive one-goal victories in the league stands out.

There’s a question as to whether Lexington’s going to be able to maintain this run. The margins the side is running on are pretty narrow – over the past three wins, LSC sits with an Expected Goal Differential of just +0.48 – but that may just be the breaks starting to go their way.

In a congested and inconsistent Western Conference, though, it’s somehow within a point of the playoff positions, and eight points from top spot. After one win in the first 12 games, that’s a much better position to be in.

Here are this week’s rankings.

Summary

1 Louisville City FC
(11-1-4)
Week 19: ---
1
Last Week:
1
It was far from the prettiest performance LouCity’s put up this season, but they found a way to close things out against Colorado Springs to keep their edge over the Battery.
2 Charleston Battery
(11-3-2)
Week 19: @ NM
2
Last Week:
4
Emilio Ycaza doesn’t score a lot of goals, but they tend to be timely when they arrive. Big win in difficult conditions for Charleston to claim the Southern Derby again.
3 FC Tulsa
(6-3-4)
Week 19: vs. LV
1
Last Week:
2
Very much two points dropped by Tulsa in Miami. They had the chances to put the game away before and after going up a player but weren’t clinical enough in the final third.
4 San Antonio FC
(7-5-3)
Week 19: vs. TBR
2
Last Week:
6
Winning away in El Paso feels like the statement win we’ve been waiting for from SAFC. Coming through despite a difficult second half was promising.
5 North Carolina FC
(7-5-2)
Week 19: vs. BHM
2
Last Week:
3
North Carolina got the sort of game it felt like it wanted against the Battery, and almost found an equalizer through Oalex Anderson. Disappointing to run the top two close away from home in consecutive games but come away with two losses.
6 Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC
(6-6-2)
Week 19: vs. LDN
6
Last Week:
12
The Hounds have won four of their last five games to shift into the top five in the East. It’s starting to feel like a pretty familiar pattern, to be honest.
7 El Paso Locomotive FC
(6-4-5)
Week 18: @ SAC

Last Week:
7
Wahab Ackwei’s first-half mistake was the lowlight of an underwhelming first half by Locomotive, but the second half was much more like it. Shame the record crowd didn’t see their side come through.
8 New Mexico United
(8-5-1)
Week 19: vs. CHS
3
Last Week:
5
United had almost 70 percent of possession in Pittsburgh, but only 19.4% of the game was played in the Hounds’ defensive third. There just wasn’t enough sustained pressure to threaten a goal by the visitors.
9 Indy Eleven
(4-5-5)
Week 19: vs. RI
5
Last Week:
14
Only Tyler Pasher has scored more goals for Indy Eleven since they joined the USL Championship than Jack Blake, who now has 17 goals across the regular season and playoffs for the Boys in Blue.
10 Loudoun United FC
(8-5-2)
Week 19: @ PIT
1
Last Week:
9
Two consecutive league outings with a foolish red card for Loudoun United, but at least they earned a point this time. They need to get things together after recording only eight points in the past eight league outings.
11 Miami FC
(5-7-2)
Week 19: vs. LEX

Last Week:
11
Miami proved the concept that sometimes you can find more fight and identity after going down to 10 players, fighting back to earn a draw against Tulsa. That’s a valuable point, all things considered.
12 Lexington SC
(4-6-5)
Week 19: @ MIA
5
Last Week:
17
LSC is on the verge of the playoff positions after a third consecutive victory in league play and fourth consecutive win overall. Who saw that coming a month ago?
13 Sacramento Republic FC
(5-4-5)
Week 19: vs. ELP
3
Last Week:
16
If there’s one thing Sacramento has shown us this year, it’s that it has Las Vegas pegged. Three games, 11 goals scored, none conceded, back up to fifth place.
14 Phoenix Rising FC
(5-5-5)
Week 19: @ OAK
6
Last Week:
8
Three games without a win for Rising in league play, and not much threat against Lexington. They’re still in decent shape, but Saturday’s game against Oakland could be an interesting one.
15 Oakland Roots SC
(5-8-2)
Week 19: vs. PHX
3
Last Week:
18
Oakland won’t win a game like that again in a very long time, but they’re showing far more defensive resilience than previously. Need to see a bit more from Peter Wilson in the penalty area.
16 Las Vegas Lights FC
(5-7-3)
Week 19: @ TUL
6
Last Week:
10
The positive signs the Lights had been showing went missing against Sacramento on Friday night. This week’s trip to Tulsa is going to be a very tricky test.
17 Orange County SC
(5-6-2)
Week 19: @ MB
4
Last Week:
13
On one hand, you’d likely take a point at Segra Field pregame given how well Loudoun’s played this season. On the other, failing to take advantage when up a player for almost an hour wasn’t great.
18 Birmingham Legion FC
(3-7-6)
Week 19: @ NC
1
Last Week:
19
Based on the chances the sides created, Legion deserved more than a point against Rhode Island. They’re going to be cursing the posts at Centreville Bank Stadium.
19 Rhode Island FC
(4-7-4)
Week 19: @ IND
4
Last Week:
15
Credit to Jackson Lee for making a couple of big saves, but Saturday night could easily have gone a different direction if not for a couple of shots off the post by Legion.
20 Tampa Bay Rowdies
(3-9-2)
Week 19: @ SA
4
Last Week:
24
Yes, the latest win against League One opposition, but Tampa Bay’s won three of its last four overall now and is in a good spot to advance from its USL Jägermeister Cup group.
21 Detroit City FC
(5-5-5)
Week 19: vs. HFD
1
Last Week:
20
Le Rouge have recorded only six points from their last eight league outings, and the front line got dominated in Oakland. It’s a good thing they made such a fast start to the season.
22 Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC
(3-6-6)
Week 19: ---
1
Last Week:
21
It’s starting to look likely the Switchbacks need to make a move for a striker. There are too many chances going begging at the present time.
23 Hartford Athletic
(2-7-3)
Week 19: @ DET
1
Last Week:
22
Big eight days coming up that could define Hartford’s season, starting in Detroit on Saturday night. Which version of Athletic is going to show up?
24 Monterey Bay FC
(5-7-4)
Week 19: vs. OC
1
Last Week:
23
Monterey Bay is still above the playoff line despite a league-fewest five points in the last eight games. It’s a good thing the rest of the West is so inconsistent.
