Orange County’s split personality has us wondering how good this side could be

With one-third of the regular season gone for most clubs, there are clearly some whose attacks are proving hit or miss.

There are four, in fact, who’ve scored in only half of their regular season contests so far this season.

Arguably the most confounding of them? It feels like Orange County SC, which when it has been good has been good enough to look like a potential contender. When it hasn’t, its defense – which has yet to post a shutout this campaign – hasn’t been able to step up.

This past Saturday we got the good attacking version of Orange County in a 3-1 victory against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC before a sellout crowd of 5,000 fans at Championship Soccer Stadium.

“I’m pleased that we were able to take the moments that we had in the game tonight,” said OCSC Head Coach Danny Stone. “I think we could have scored a couple more goals still in the game, but I think the players rewarded themselves for taking an early chance and scoring the first goal, which is important, and then they fought.”

Saturday’s performance gave OCSC 13 goals in the five games in which it has scored this season – games in which it is 4-0-1 in the campaign, having recorded multiple goals on each occasion. For a team that on paper has attacking talent, though, it’s been confounding that there’s been no real margin between boom and bust so far, putting the side in the middle of the pack in the West.

It's also because of that we’re still optimistic as to where this side could be headed in the next 10 games. The underlying numbers are decent – OCSC is in the ranks of those underperforming its Expected Points mark in American Soccer Analysis’ breakdown – and we think there’s a chance for someone like Lyam MacKinnon or Bryce Jamison to catch a spark sooner rather than later.

In the muddled middle of the West, it’s time for some clubs to make a move.

Here are this week’s rankings.

Summary

1 Charleston Battery
(8-2-0)
Week 13: vs. GVL

Last Week:
1
The Battery have won seven games in a row for the first time in the USL Championship era and are averaging three goals per game during the run. Everything is clicking right now.
2 El Paso Locomotive FC
(5-2-4)
Week 13: vs. COS

Last Week:
2
It had been 29 games since El Paso had conceded first and come back to win in the Championship before Saturday. The opponent on June 15, 2023? Somehow also Las Vegas.
3 Sacramento Republic FC
(3-2-4)
Week 13: vs. LV

Last Week:
3
Republic FC got the week off after its drubbing of Las Vegas, which gets a return trip to Heart Health Park this weekend for the USL Jägermeister Cup. We’re expecting a tighter contest.
4 Louisville City FC
(6-0-4)
Week 13: @ LDN
2
Last Week:
6
LouCity dazzled us with their attack last season. This season the defense is taking over with a league-fewest five goals conceded in 10 games to keep the side undefeated.
5 New Mexico United
(7-3-0)
Week 13: @ PHX
4
Last Week:
9
Consecutive three-goal performances on the road should be the headline in United’s bounce-back wins, but they also got some crucial saves from Alex Tambakis in Oakland as well.
6 Loudoun United FC
(7-3-0)
Week 13: vs. LOU
1
Last Week:
7
This has been a breakthrough season for Loudoun United, but they’ve lost twice to Louisville City in the league and Open Cup. Third time lucky in the USL Jägermeister Cup on Saturday?
7 North Carolina FC
(5-3-2)
Week 13: @ RIC
1
Last Week:
8
NCFC had the weekend off but has won three in a row in league play coming into its second USL Jägermeister Cup game. After falling in its opener, the trip to Richmond is a must-win.
8 FC Tulsa
(5-3-1)
Week 13: vs. BHM
2
Last Week:
10
Everything about Tulsa passes the eye-test – both on the field and in its underlying numbers. If you haven’t see them yet this season, you should tune in on Wednesday night.
9 Indy Eleven
(1-3-4)
Week 13: vs. HFD
3
Last Week:
12
Indy put itself in great position to advance out of Group 3 in the USL Jägermeister Cup by defeating One Knoxville in regulation. We know the Championship record isn’t great, but we believe that’s coming.
10 Detroit City FC
(4-2-5)
Week 13: @ POR
6
Last Week:
4
Detroit was a step slow against Charleston on Saturday afternoon for its first home loss of the season in an example of how a six-game undefeated streak quickly turns to a four-game winless run.
11 Phoenix Rising FC
(3-3-4)
Week 13: @ LV; vs. NM
2
Last Week:
13
We’re feeling pretty good about Rising’s momentum the last couple of games. They won’t want to get caught feeling too good ahead of their trip to Las Vegas, though.
12 Birmingham Legion FC
(2-4-4)
Week 13: @ SA; @ TUL
7
Last Week:
19
Legion wasn’t good in the first half against Miami but came out of the traps firing in the second half to turn things around for victory, Mark Briggs’ first at the helm.
13 Miami FC
(3-5-1)
Week 13: vs. NAP
8
Last Week:
5
Miami could have done more when it held the upper hand on Birmingham in the first half on Saturday and ended up paying the price. Good chance to rebound against FC Naples this weekend.
14 San Antonio FC
(5-4-1)
Week 13: vs. TUL
1
Last Week:
15
San Antonio’s in good position for now, but this game against Tulsa on Wednesday is sneakily important. SAFC needs to reestablish its defensive presence on home turf.
15 Orange County SC
(4-5-1)
Week 13: @ MB
3
Last Week:
18
There’s no team that’s quite as boom-or-bust as Orange County right now. This week was a boom against Colorado Springs. Can they continue it against Monterey Bay?
16 Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC
(3-5-2)
Week 13: vs. RI
4
Last Week:
20
Danny Griffin’s only the third player to record 150 regular season appearances for the Hounds in the USL Championship era, and he marked it with a game-winner in Rhode Island. That’s tremendous.
17 Rhode Island FC
(3-4-3)
Week 13: @ PIT
6
Last Week:
11
Two steps forward on the road, one step back at home. RIFC really needs to get that first win at Centreville Bank Stadium to settle it down.
18 Monterey Bay FC
(4-4-4)
Week 13: vs. SPK
4
Last Week:
14
Monterey Bay’s winless in six after its loss to Louisville. There’s nothing wrong with losing to a side of that caliber, but two goals in the last six league games is a concern.
19 Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC
(2-4-5)
Week 13: @ ELP
3
Last Week:
16
The Switchbacks undid some of the progress of the past two games with a loss in Orange County. Time to see if the USL Jägermeister Cup can spark something.
20 Oakland Roots SC
(3-7-1)
Week 13: @ AV
3
Last Week:
17
It wasn’t just that the Roots were down two goals inside six minutes, it was how the goals were conceded. You can’t give a team as good as New Mexico that sort of cushion.
21 Hartford Athletic
(1-5-2)
Week 13: @ IND; @ WES

Last Week:
21
This could be a pretty big week for Hartford. First try to build on a point against Louisville City as you face Indy Eleven, then look to make it two wins from two in the USL Jägermeister Cup.
22 Las Vegas Lights FC
(3-4-3)
Week 13: vs. PHX; @ SAC

Last Week:
22
The Lights’ record of winning every game in which they scored first is done, but we were at least a little more enthused with the attacking reinforcements they showed against El Paso.
23 Tampa Bay Rowdies
(1-7-2)
Week 13: vs. TRM

Last Week:
23
The Rowdies have never had a seven-game winless streak since joining the USL Championship, until now. At least Manuel Arteaga’s finally bagged a league goal.
24 Lexington SC
(1-5-5)
Week 13: @ CLT

Last Week:
24
The chances Lexington allowed Tampa Bay in the second half meant their lead was always going to be under threat. At least the Rowdies’ aren’t in the scoring form some clubs are right now.
