Charleston's Cal Jennings named Player of the Week with 13th USL Championship brace

TAMPA, Fla. – The USL Championship today announced the Team of the Week for Week 11 of the 2025 regular season, with Charleston Battery forward Cal Jennings named Player of the Week presented by Konami eFootball with his second brace of the season.

On his 28th birthday, the current USL Championship Golden Boot leader bagged his 13th regular-season brace to move into a tie for the second-most in league history. Jennings scored from the spot in the 24th minute before completing his brace in the 59th minute, helping Charleston grab its first-ever victory against San Antonio FC.

"I thought we moved the ball really well and, honestly, we just have a lot of talent, too; guys that we can put the ball into," Jennings said. "They can break pressure and frustrate the other teams, and I thought a lot of guys had really good performances tonight. 

"MD [Myers] and I are working our butts off up there, running, trying to trying to get us extra opportunities and the team is doing a great job of picking up those and and creating chances, whether that's penalties, whether that shots, where we're getting rebounds. We're just trying to stay focused and get them anyway."

The Championship's Player of the Week is selected by the USL National Media Panel, which is made up of representatives from each media market in the Championship. Jennings finished with 55%, while New Mexico's Talen Maples finished second on 27%.

GK – Kris Shakes, New Mexico United: In his fifth start as a professional, the 24-year-old Shakes recorded the second clean sheet of his career with five saves on the road against Orange County.

D – Lamar Batista, FC Tulsa: After winning the penalty that resulted in Taylor Calheira's 41st-minute winner, Batista scored his first of the season in second-half stoppage time to seal Tulsa's 2-0 victory in Lexington. In his 175th professional appearance, Batista recorded 15 duels won, six fouls won, six clearances, four tackles won, four recoveries and three completed long passes.

D – Talen Maples, New Mexico United: Maples put away a pair of penalty kicks on either side of halftime to send New Mexico to a 3-0 road victory against Orange County. The 26-year-old also added six clearances, a 76% passing accuracy rate, five recoveries and three completed long passes.

D – Jack Gurr, Sacramento Republic FC: The 29-year-old scored his second goal of the season on Saturday, contributing to Sacramento's 5-0 victory against Las Vegas. Gurr added eight duels won, four accurate crosses, four tackles won, three chances created, and completed 89% of his passes.

M – Mikey Maldonado, North Carolina FC: The former USL League One champion constructed the fourth multi-goal-contribution match of his professional career, recording the assist on Jaden Servania's opener before scoring a goal of his own in first-half stoppage time. Maldonado also tallied a 79% passing accuracy rate, five completed long passes, five recoveries, four duels won and two chances created.

M – Eric Calvillo, El Paso Locomotive FC: Calvillo's first goal of the season served as El Paso's winner against Indy Eleven on Friday. The former USL Championship title-winner also completed 94% of his 49 passes, won seven of his eight duels, connected on six long passes, registered five recoveries, won all four of his tackles and created three chances.

M – J.P. Scearce, Phoenix Rising FC: Scearce bagged the winner - his first goal of the season - in Phoenix's 2-0 victory against Monterey Bay. The former USL League One champion also completed 71% of his passes and recorded nine duels won, four won tackles, four recoveries and two accurate long passes.

M – Luiz Fernando, New Mexico United: Fernando scored the final goal of New Mexico's 3-0 victory in Orange County, doubling his tally on the year. The 27-year-old finished with an 83% passing accuracy rate, six recoveries, five duels won, two chances created, two successful dribbles and two completed long passes.

F – Andy Cabrera, El Paso Locomotive FC: Cabrera registered two assists in a single match for the first time in his career, helping El Paso to a 3-1 victory against Indy. Cabrera also won six duels, tallied two recoveries and completed 70% of his passes.

F – Sebastián Herrera, Sacramento Republic FC: The 30-year-old Colombian was instrumental in Sacramento's 5-0 thrashing of Las Vegas, recording a goal, an assist and a penalty won. Herrera also added five duels won, four recoveries and four fouls won.

F – Cal Jennings, Charleston Battery: The Golden Boot leader registered a brace in Charleston's first-ever victory against San Antonio. The 28-year-old finished with four chances created, four duels won, two fouls won, and completed 69% of his passes.

Coach – Khano Smith, Rhode Island FC: In a pair of Week 11 contests, Smith's side registered back-to-back shutout road victories, picking up three points against both Birmingham on Wednesday and Tampa Bay on Saturday.
