PITTSBURGH – Beto Ydrach scored his first goal in the professional ranks in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time to lift Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC to a 1-0 victory against New York City FC of Major League Soccer to advance to the Round of 16 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night at Highmark Stadium.

Ydrach produced a stellar back-post header off a corner kick by Robbie Mertz to send the Hounds to their third victory in the past four meetings with MLS opposition and sent the side to a date with the Philadelphia Union in the next round on May 20 or 21.

The Hounds had the first good look at goal in the 10th minute when a delivery by Mertz off a free kick arrived slightly behind Bertin Jacquesson only for the striker to fire a turning shot that was saved by NYCFC goalkeeper Tomas Romero.

The visitors tested Hounds goalie Eric Dick shortly after, when Mounsef Bakrar cleverly lifted the ball to himself before driving a hard, angled shot that Dick smothered at the near post. The Hounds went close again late in the first half when Jorge Garcia made a solo run toward the top of the box, and though his initial chance was blocked, he struck a good shot with the second effort, forcing Romero into a diving stop to keep the ball out of the bottom right corner.

After a bright start to the second half by NYCFC produced a chip from Trayvon Gray and a chance for Andres Perea that were both denied by Dick, the visitors were reduced to 10 players when Strahinja Tanasijevic was sent off after being caught in possession by Bradley Sample before dragging the Hounds player down 35 yards from goal, resulting in a red card for denial of a goalscoring opportunity.

The visitors still threatened while shorthanded – Jonathan Shore hit the crossbar from distance, and Julian Fernandez missed the target with an open look at the back post – but as extra time beckoned, Ydrach delivered to send the Hounds through.

AUSTIN FC 3, EL PASO LOCOMOTIVE FC 2: Beto Avila scored a pair of first-half goals for El Paso Locomotive but the visitors were undone as United States International Brandon Vasquez recorded two goals and one assist after the break to rally Austin FC to victory at Q2 Stadium.

Avila put the visitors ahead in the 20th minute as he received possession from Amando Moreno just outside the penalty area and curled home a low shot to the near post, freezing Austin goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland. After Vasquez had gone close to leveling for Austin with an effort off the crossbar, Avila doubled El Paso’s lead seven minutes before halftime with a low shot to the left corner.

Having already made it deepest run in the Open Cup in club history, Locomotive attempted to hold its lead in the second half, but with 17 minutes to go Vasquez pulled a goal back off a cross by Owen Wolff before setting up Myrto Uzuni for the equalizer three minutes later. Vasquez added his second with 10 minutes to go, and while El Paso pressed late for an equalizer – including being denied a penalty appear in stoppage time – the hosts held on to advance.

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION 2, RHODE ISLAND FC 1: Maxi Rodriguez became the first Rhode Island player to score at Centreville Bank Stadium but a late winner by the Revolution’s Cristiano Oliveira sent the visitors from Major League Soccer to victory in the first meetings between the northeastern clubs.

After an even first half, the Revolution struck first when Tomás Chancalay took advantage of a moment of hesitancy in the Rhode Island defense before squeezing home a finish in the 38th minute. RIFC responded five minutes into the second half, however, as Noah Fuson clipped a low cross to the top of the penalty area that Rodriguez met with a first-time finish that picked out the bottom-right corner of the net.

Fuson then had a pair of chances blocked for the hosts, but with two minutes to go the Revolution’s Gevork Diarbian delivered a cross from the left that caromed off the inside of the right post and came to Oliveira, who fired home despite a desperate attempt to save from Rhode Island’s Jackson Lee.

PHILADELPHIA UNION 1 (5), INDY ELEVEN 1 (4): Elvis Amoh recorded a second-half equalizer for Indy Eleven and Reice Charles-Cook produced a 10-save performance only for the visitors to fall to the Philadelphia Union in a penalty shootout at Subaru Park as Jovan Lukic scored the decisive goal in the fifth round of the shootout.

It took only six minutes for the Union to go ahead as Ale Bedoya headed home a cross from Olivier Mbaizo, and the hosts continued to control most of the play until late in the first half when Jack Blake threatened twice to level for the Boys in Blue. The equalizer arrived three minutes into the second half, however, as Maalique Foster was sprung into space on the left and delivered a low cross that Amoh flicked into the net from inside the six-yard area.

Charles-Cook and the Indy back line were able to keep the Union at bay from there, but after the game went to a shootout, Indy’s Aodhan Quinn was denied to open the third round by Philadelphia goalkeeper Andrew Rick, and from there the hosts went a perfect 5 for 5 to move on.

HOUSTON DYNAMO FC 4, PHOENIX RISING FC 1 (AET): Dariusz Formella scored from the penalty spot as Phoenix Rising took the Houston Dynamo to extra time at Phoenix Rising Stadium, but a spectacular finish by United States international Jack McGlynn sparked a three-goal run by the visitors in the extra 30 minutes that saw the 2023 Open Cup champions pull away for victory.

Houston opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Felipe Andrade headed home a free kick by Nicolas Lodeiro, but Rising was given the opportunity to hit back from the spot when Ihsan Sacko was brought down in first-half stoppage time. Formella stepped up and converted to the left corner of the net, but then the hosts needed a stellar display by goalkeeper Patrick Rakovsky in the second half to send the game to an additional 30 minutes.

McGlynn broke the game open in the 99th minute, however, with a knuckling strike from outside the top-right edge of the penalty area that picked out the top-left corner. From there, the Dynamo continued to pour forward as both Ezequiel Ponce and Sebastian Kowalczyk scored from close range to wrap up the result for the visitors.

MINNESOTA UNITED FC 1, LOUISVILLE CITY FC 0: Louisville City suffered its first defeat of the 2025 season as Alisa Randall scored the only goal with 25 minutes to go for Minnesota United at Lynn Family Stadium in a contest that saw LouCity outshoot its visitors 15-6 but ultimately endure a frustrating night in front of goal.

LouCity went closest to opening the scoring in the opening half as Taylor Davila set up brother Evan for a volleyed finish from a corner kick that flashed just over the crossbar. The hosts continued to threaten as the second half began, and Kevon Lambert almost put the side ahead with a header that was well saved by Minnesota goalkeeper Wessel Speel.

That moment proved key when MNUFC took the lead in the 65th minute as Jeong Sang-Bin was played into the right side of the penalty area and cut a low cross through the top of the six-yard area where Randall slid home from close range. LouCity pressed consistently for the remaining minutes, but the 2024 Championship Players’ Shield winner was unable to find a way through to level.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES 2, SACRAMENTO REPUBLIC FC 1: Preston Judd recorded a goal and assist to lead San Jose to victory against Republic FC at PayPal Park as Trevor Amann’s late finish for the visitors proved to be only a consolation.

Judd helped the Quakes take the lead after just 64 seconds as he set up Amahl Pellegrino for a finish from the right side of the penalty area, and the hosts continued to pressure only to see their finish go astray. A former Championship standout, Judd added a second a minute before halftime, however, with a volleyed finish off a set-up by Niko Tsakiris.

San Jose was reduced to 10 players late on when Jamar Ricketts was sent off for a hard foul, and deep in stoppage time Republic FC pulled a goal back as Amann broke onto a tremendous through-ball by Rodrigo Lopez before rounding the goalkeeper and finishing, but it proved to come too late as the final whistle blew a few moments later.

CHICAGO FIRE FC 4, DETROIT CITY FC 0: Belgian striker Hugo Cuypers scored early before Maren Haile-Selassie had a goal and assist to lead the Fire to victory against Detroit City at SeatGeek Stadium and into the Round of 16.

Chicago broke the game open early as Haile-Selassie’s pressure forced a turnover in the Detroit end that Cuypers capitalized on to open the scoring in the fourth minute. The Fire doubled their lead eight minutes before halftime as Le Rouge forward Darren Smith was unable to control an attempted clearance at a corner, resulting in an own goal, before Omari Glasgow added a third goal for the hosts five minutes into the second half. Haile-Selassie then wrapped up the result with 19 minutes to go as Le Rouge were unable to mount a comeback.

ORLANDO CITY SC 5, TAMPA BAY ROWDIES 0: Gustavo Caraballo scored a pair of first-half goals to lead Orlando City to victory against the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the latest meeting between the I-4 rivals and the first in the Open Cup at Al Lang Stadium.

Chances were limited for both sides in the opening half-hour, but Caraballo struck twice in three minutes to put the Lions in control as he opened the scoring in the 34th minute. Orlando added a third in the 42nd minute from Ramiro Enrique before the visitors’ momentum continued into the second half as Duncan McGuire and Dagur Thórhallsson wrapped up the scoring.
