Regional rivalries came to the fore for the USL Championship’s 12 clubs remaining in the Round of 32 of the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as the draw was made on Thursday morning, with seven clubs overall receiving home draws as the tournament continues on Tuesday, May 6 and Wednesday, May 7 with the entry of Major League Soccer’s 16 representatives.
Rhode Island FC will play host to the New England Revolution at Centreville Bank Stadium in the first official meeting between the clubs, with RIFC Head Coach Khano Smith set to face the club he previously made 101 appearances for in Major League Soccer. The contest will mark the second contest at RIFC’s new 10,500-seat venue as the defending Eastern Conference title-holders compete in the Round of 32 for the first time
The Tampa Bay Rowdies will renew their rivalry with Orlando City SC at Al Lang Stadium, with the sides having previously squared three years ago. Orlando claimed a 2-1 victory when the teams last met in the Third Round in 2022, but this will mark the first time since Orlando joined Major League Soccer in 2015 that the Rowdies will host Lions in the tournament.
North Carolina FC will play host to Charlotte FC, meanwhile, setting up another in-state rivalry meeting and their first official contest against the recent arrival to Major League Soccer. Having advanced past the Charlotte Independence in the Third Round, NCFC will be hoping to claim victory on home turf.
Sacramento Republic FC will head on the road to face NorCal rival the San Jose Earthquakes, a matchup that brings the sides together for the third time in the past four seasons. Republic FC has claimed victory on home turf in each of the prior two contests, including a thrilling 4-3 victory in extra time at Heart Health Park last year that saw Luis Felipe Fernandes and Sebastian Herrera strike to send the side through.
Other notable matchups include a renewal of the Coffee Pot Cup as the Charleston Battery visit D.C. United, with the two sides sharing a lengthy history that includes a meeting in the 2008 Open Cup Final. Meanwhile, Phoenix Rising FC will play host to Houston Dynamo FC, bringing former Rising Head Coach and current Dynamo assistant Juan Guerra back to face his former club.
Elsewhere, Louisville City FC will play host to Minnesota United FC in a matchup of current high-flyers in their respective leagues, while defending USL Championship title-holders Colorado Springs will welcome the New York Red Bulls to Weidner Field for an intriguing cross-country matchup.
Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC will play host to New York City FC at Highmark Stadium aiming to deliver another memorable Open Cup night on the banks of the Monongahela. Detroit City FC will head on the road for its first official meeting with Chicago Fire FC, while Indy Eleven will visit the Philadelphia Union looking to make a second consecutive run in the tournament after reaching the Semifinals a season ago and El Paso Locomotive FC will visit Austin FC as Locomotive faces MLS opposition in the competition for the first time.
