TAMPA, Fla. – The USL Championship today announced that San Antonio FC's Carlos Llamosa has been named the USL Championship Coach of the Month for March.
In his first month as a professional head coach, the former United States international led San Antonio FC to the top of the table with a perfect 4-0-0 start to its 10th season. Llamosa and SAFC got things going with back-to-back shutout victories at Toyota Field against Monterey Bay FC and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC. SAFC finished the month with a pair of road victories, first against Oakland Roots SC in front of over 26,000 at the Oakland Coliseum and then against Lexington SC after erasing a two-goal deficit.
San Antonio's 4-0-0 start to the regular season sets a club record for most consecutive league victories to begin a season, and its four-win March matches the second-most wins in a single month in club history.
"I am grateful and honored to receive this recognition," Llamosa said. "It has been a positive month for all of us, and this is all possible due to the hard work and effort of our organization, the players and the coaching staff."
Though in his first season as a professional head coach, Llamosa began his coaching career as an assistant in Major League Soccer with Chivas USA in 2010. He then moved to the NASL's New York Cosmos as an assistant, helping lead the squad to a NASL Fall Season title and NASL Soccer Bowl title in the same season.
As a player, Llamosa made 192 appearances with MLS sides D.C. United (1997-2000), Miami Fusion (2001), New England Revolution (2002-05) and Chivas USA (2006-07). Llamosa won the 1998 Concacaf Champions Cup and is a two-time MLS Cup and Supporters' Shield winner with D.C.; he was selected to the MLS Best XI with Miami in 2001. Shortly after becoming a United States citizen in 1998, Llamosa made his United States Men's National Team debut and went on to earn 29 caps. Llamosa officially retired from professional play in 2007.
Llamosa earned the award with 78% of the ballot. Louisville City FC's Danny Cruz finished second on 10% after guiding LouCity to an unblemished 3-0-1 record.
The USL Championship's Coach of the Month award is voted upon by the USL Championship National Media Panel and the USL Championship Technical Committee, with each group responsible for 50% of the overall vote.
