FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Francisco Bonfiglio scored his third goal of the Open Cup with six minutes to go to lift Miami FC past IMCF II at Chase Stadium in a game where the veteran experience of the visitors paid off in the end.
IMCF II had the majority of possession on the night, but Miami created more clear-cut chances of the two sides with both Bonfiglio and Lucas Melano having chances denied in the first half by Baby Herons goalkeeper Matias Marin. The lone shot on target for the hosts came in the second half when a free kick from the top of the penalty area by Yuval Cohen was turned wide of the right post by Miami’s Bill Hamid.
As extra time began to beckon, however, the visitors struck as Deian Veron’s low corner kick from the left was deftly flicked home at the near post by Bonfiglio for his fourth goal across all competitions this season, sending the USL Championship side through.
EL FAROLITO FC 2, MONTEREY BAY FC 1: Andrés Zuluaga and Edgard Kreye scored second-half goals as El Farolito FC rallied from a halftime deficit to defeat Monterey Bay FC at Cardinale Stadium after Xavi Gnaulati had put the hosts ahead in the first half.
Monterey Bay had the better of the first half, creating the better chances as Gnaulati had an early chance blocked before having a close-range effort saved before Ethan Bryant hit the crossbar with a follow-up effort in the 25th minute. The hosts took the lead from the penalty spot three minutes later, however, as Gnaulati converted after a handball in the box.
Mayele Malango also had an effort denied seven minutes before halftime, but El Farolito fought back in the second half as Zuluaga delivered the equalizer, scoring from close range off a cross by Gabriel Arias nine minutes after the break. The visitors continued to carry the play in the second half, and with six minutes to go it paid off as after Dembor Benson hit the woodwork with a header and Jhonatan Pérez had a follow-up cleared off the line, Kreye put home his effort from the center of the penalty area to send the San Francisco-based amateurs into the Third Round for a second consecutive year.
COLUMBUS CREW 2 (3), LEXINGTON SC 0: Cristian Ortiz was among the scorers as Columbus Crew 2 eliminated Lexington SC from the Open Cup at Historic Crew Stadium as Chase Adams had a pair of assists for the hosts.
Columbus jumped ahead in just the seventh minute when Owen Presthus’ shot from the top of the penalty area took a slight deflection and found the right corner of the net. Lexington had a chance to respond midway through the half when Braudilio Rodrigues hit the right post with a first-time effort, but that was as close as the visitors would get to level before the break.
Lexington hit the woodwork again when a flicked header by Kendall Burks hit the crossbar and the inside of the left post off a well-worked corner that set up Eliot Goldthorp’s delivery. Ortiz – on loan with Crew 2 from the Tampa Bay Rowdies this season – capitalized on a moment of hesitance in the LSC defense to double the lead for the hosts in the 65th minute. While Lexington continued to push forward they ended the night with only three shots on target before Brent Adu-Gyamfi scored the third for the hosts in second-half stoppage time.
