Oakland Roots SC has signed veteran Swiss goalkeeper Raphael Spiegel, who most recently competed for Lausanne-Sport in his native country.
OAKLAND, Calif. – Oakland Roots SC announced on Tuesday the club had signed Swiss goalkeeper Raphael Spiegel for the 2025 USL Championship season.
Spiegel joins Roots having most recently competed for Lausanne-Sport in his native Switzerland. The 32-year-old made 10 appearances across all competitions for the side, posting a pair of shutouts in league and cup action.
“We have been intent on creating competition at all positions throughout our roster,” said Head Coach Gavin Glinton. “Raphael comes to us with experience all over Europe and his experience will not only help the squad but help the entire goalkeeping unit.”
A native of Rüttenen, Switzerland, Spiegel came into the professional ranks at Grasshoppers before a transfer to Premier League club West Ham United in 2012. He made 47 appearances for the Hammers’ reserve team in the Premier League 2, posting 12 shutouts, while also spending time on loan in the EFL with Crawley Town and Carlisle United.
After a stint with Portuguese top-flight club Boavista, he returned to Switzerland with FC Winterthur, where he made 117 appearances across all competitions for the second-tier club. He then moved to Lausanne-Sport for the 2022-23 season before joining Oakland this month.
