CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Battery announced on Tuesday the club had signed goalkeeper Luis Zamudio ahead of the 2025 USL Championship season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.
Zamudio spent the past three seasons with Major League Soccer’s D.C. United, where he served primarily as a back-up. The 26-year-old has also competed in the USL Championship and League One, and Liga MX, having entered the professional ranks with Club América at the start of his career.
“The Battery have been so close to winning a championship in recent years and I hope to help the club achieve that goal,” said Zamudio. “While playing time is important to me, having the opportunity to win trophies is by far the most important thing I’m looking forward to. After speaking to Coach Pirmann, what also excites me about this upcoming season is how the team as a whole is going to have the freedom to express ourselves on the field.”
Zamudio spent time on loan in the Championship over the past two seasons with Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC in 2023 and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in 2024. Zamudio posted an undefeated record of 2W-0L-3D with Pittsburgh and recorded four shutouts.
The 6-foot-4 shot-stopper had previously had a breakout campaign in 2022 with Loudoun United FC, starting 27 matches and registering seven clean sheets. Zamudio recorded the second-most saves in the Championship with 105, including two penalty saves. He reunites with former Loudoun teammate Houssou Landry in Charleston.
“Luis is a very good goalkeeper who we identified early on in the recruitment process,” said Battery Head Coach Ben Pirmann. “He is an excellent shot-stopper with good range and is solid with his feet in the build-up phases. Luis has shown through his time in the USL and MLS that he can make plays to win matches for his team.
“Over the past two years, we have had incredible successes in our goalkeeper department led by coach Brian Jones. We anticipate Luis to be the next in line to grow under Jones’ guidance and in adding to that success while pushing our club to compete for trophies.”
Before D.C. and Loudoun, Zamudio competed with Fort Lauderdale CF (now Inter Miami II) in 2021 and North Texas SC in 2020. A native of Las Vegas, Zamudio joined Club América’s academy in 2015 and played for the U-20 side from 2018 to 2019. He was then elevated to the First Team in August 2019 as the understudy to Memo Ochoa.
He is now looking forward to his new chapter in Charleston.
“I played against the Battery in the past and seeing how loyal and great the fanbase is here was one of the reasons I had interest in joining,” said Zamudio. “I have also heard great things about the city and how beautiful it is here year-round.”
