BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham Legion FC announced on Monday it had acquired defender Stephen Turnbull via transfer from fellow USL Championship club Rhode Island FC ahead of the 2025 USL Championship season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.

Turnbull joins Legion having featured prominently in Rhode Island claiming the 2024 Eastern Conference title. The right back appeared in all 34 regular season matches for RIFC including 31 starts, winning 46 tackles at a 63 percent success rate and 191 duels at a 54.1 percent success rate while also logging 22 interceptions and 17 blocked shots.

The 26-year-old also notched three goals, three assists and 27 chances created in attack, completing 37 dribbles at a 57.8 percent success rate. He also scored in Rhode Island’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup outing against the Charlotte Independence.

"I am very excited to be joining Birmingham Legion FC," said Turnbull. "I look forward to helping the team achieve its goals and win a lot of games in front of the fans at Protective Stadium. I'm also excited to meet the team and get acclimated ahead of the new season."

A New York native and a product of Stony Brook University, Turnbull began his professional career in his home state and played two seasons in Major League Soccer and MLS NEXT Pro with New York City FC. He made 11 first team appearances during the 2023 MLS season.
