CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Battery announced on Sunday the club had signed Ivorian midfielder Houssou Landry to a multi-year contract ahead of the 2025 USL Championship season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.
Houssou joins Charleston having spent the past season with New Mexico United, where he made 35 appearances across all competitions. Across the USL Championship regular season and playoffs, Houssou led the team in tackles won (42), interceptions (47) and duels won (146). The midfielder also recorded one goal, one assist, 22 chances created and 33 clearances in Championship play.
“The club's project made me want to join, and when I spoke with Coach Pirmann, he really convinced me to be part of it,” said Houssou. “I’m excited and have high expectations, I hope to help the club, on and off the field, and fight for more trophies. Regarding the style of play, I really like the team's pressing and tactics, the Battery are a club that scores a lot and also plays solid defensively.”
Prior to joining New Mexico, the 24-year-old competed for fellow USL Championship club Loudoun United FC, where he made 82 appearances across all competitions from 2021 to 2023. The Ivorian was also called up to D.C. United and made his debut for the MLS side during the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
“Houssou has the ability to be one of the best midfielders in all of the USL,” said Battery Head Coach Ben Pirmann. “He is as strong and assertive as any player in our league, while also showcasing a savviness and intellect to control the game in and out of possession. Houssou will have an immediate impact in our club and should be a player our fans get excited to support for a long time.”
