Detroit City inks defender Matt Sheldon to new deal

DETROIT – Detroit City FC announced on Tuesday it had signed defender Matt Sheldon to a one-year contract extension, keeping him in the Rouge and Gold for the 2025 USL Championship season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.

Sheldon was acquired via a transfer with Hartford Athletic in the build-up to the 2024 season and went on to make 30 appearances for the club during the campaign, totaling 1,200 minutes of action across the regular season and playoffs. The 32-year-old recorded one goal and one assist while notching 17 interceptions, 57 recoveries and 30 clearances while posting a duel success rate of 59 percent and tackle success rate of 67.7 percent.

The 2024 season saw Sheldon pass 150 appearances in the USL Championship for his career, having previously competed for Orange County SC, Saint Louis FC, FC Tulsa and the Charleston Battery prior to Hartford.

He enters the new season having notched 182 appearances across the Championship’s regular season and playoffs, recording four goals and 10 assists in 13,390 minutes of action.
