CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Battery announced on Monday the club had signed Honduran international Douglas Martínez to a multi-year contract ahead of the 2025 USL Championship season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.
Martínez brings extensive experience from Liga Nacional (Honduras), the USL Championship, Major League Soccer and the senior national team levels to Charleston.
“I'm excited for the season to start, I came here to help the team fight and win games,” said Martínez. “I'm sure that is going to be a good season and hopefully we can win some trophies.
“I’ve played against the Battery many times and they were always a very tough team to play against. I like the squad, the way the team has played and the fans who are behind the goal always there supporting the team.”
Martínez has previously competed in the USL Championship for Indy Eleven, Sacramento Republic FC, San Diego Loyal SC, Real Monarchs SLC and New York Red Bulls II, recording 35 goals and 18 assists across 150 appearances in the regular season and playoffs while helping the Monarchs claim the 2019 USL Championship title.
Additionally, Martínez recorded two goals in 25 appearances for Real Salt Lake in Major League Soccer between 2019 and 2021.
A native of Olanchito, Honduras, Martínez made his professional debut in 2013 with Liga Nacional club Vida at 16 years old.
“We are thrilled to add Douglas to our club, he is not only an experienced striker in this league, but he is a tremendous person,” said Battery Head Coach Ben Pirmann. “He has played for our staff before and is a hard worker. He is willing to do whatever it takes to win, has great speed and quickness, runs well beyond the opponent, and has a physical presence that we have lacked at times.”
On the international stage, Martínez is a member of the Honduran national team and has eight caps and one goal with the senior team since debuting in 2019. Martínez competed with La H in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, appearing in all three matches.
