COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC announced on Friday night the club had signed defender Matt Mahoney to a new contract ahead of the 2025 USL Championship season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.
Mahoney is coming off a standout 2024 season in which he played every minute of the campaign as the Switchbacks claim its first USL Championship title with a 3-0 victory against Rhode Island FC before a sellout crowd at Weidner Field on November 23.
The Buffalo, N.Y. native led the Championship with 68 interceptions and ranked fifth in clearances with 135 during the regular season, guiding the Switchbacks to their highest finish in the Western Conference in club history. In turn, he earned his first selection to the USL Championship All-League First Team and was a finalist for the league’s Defender of the Year award.
“I’m so happy to be coming back again next year. These fans and this organization have made Colorado Springs a home for me,” said Mahoney. “To be able to bring a championship to this club and these fans this season means the world to me, and I can’t wait to be back at Weidner Field next season.”
Mahoney was one of the early signings for the Switchbacks prior to the club’s move into Weidner field prior to the 2021 season. He now ranks third in club history with 136 appearances across the regular season and playoffs and second with 11,869 minutes of action, with the potential to become the all-time leader in both categories in the upcoming 2025 USL Championship season.
“We are delighted to have re-signed Matt to a new deal,” said Sporting Director Stephen Hogan. “He is a fantastic captain who leads by example on and off the field. His growth in the game and leadership have led us to our first championship.”
