SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC announced on Thursday it had re-signed midfielder Jorge Hernandez to a new multi-year contract ahead of the 2025 USL Championship season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval, and per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“We’re thrilled to keep Jorge in the SAFC family,” said SAFC Sporting Director Marco Ferruzzi. “He has consistently performed as a top playmaker in our league and is coveted by clubs inside and outside the USL. His talent and professional work ethic is the standard for us and is representative of our club’s ambitions. We have high expectations for Jorge, as does he, and we look forward to having him on the field.”
Hernandez earned his third selection to the USL Championship’s All-League First Team this past season as he led the league with 83 chances created and finished second with nine assists. An early-season arrival with SAFC in 2023, the Mexican playmaker set a club single-season assist record with 10 helpers in 28 matches to earn the Championship’s Golden Playmaker award.
The 24-year-old began his professional career in 2017 with former USL Championship club the LA Galaxy II, making 88 appearances in five seasons. He earned First Team All-League honors with Los Dos after a breakout season in 2021 where he notched 12 goals and six assists. The Sahuayo, Mexico native has also spent time abroad with European First Division sides KV Mechelen (2022-23) and Chornomorets Odesa (2022).
Analysis
There might not have been a higher priority on the to-do list of SAFC Sporting Director Marco Ferruzzi this offseason than to ensure Jorge Hernandez remained at Toyota Field. The attacking playmaker has been one of the brightest players in the Championship over the past two seasons, and still found ways to excel during a down year for the 2022 title-winners that saw them miss out on the postseason.
Hernandez’s 19 assists over the past two regular season are the most by any player in the league over that span, while his 138 chances created rank third only to the Charleston Battery’s Aaron Molloy (146) and Louisville City FC’s Taylor Davila (141), each of whom joined him in the USL Championship’s All-League First Team in the past two seasons. As SAFC looks for a bounce-back season, Hernandez figures to be a key part of that resurgence.
