Oakland Roots SC has signed defender Neveal Hackshaw (left) and forward Johnny Rodriguez to new contracts ahead of the 2025 USL Championship season.

OAKLAND, Calif. – Oakland Roots SC announced on Wednesday it had signed defender Neveal Hackshaw and forward Johnny Rodriguez to new contracts and exercised contract options on midfielders Rafael Baca and Daniel Gomez and forward Wolfgang Prentice among its initial roster moves following the 2024 USL Championship season. The transactions are pending league and federation approval.

Goalkeeper Tim Syrel, defenders Gagi Margvelashvili, Baboucarr Njie and Justin Rasmussen, midfielder Camden Riley, and forwards Etsgar Cruz, Dom Dwyer, Miche Naider-Chéry, and Jose Luis Sinisterra were previously under contract for the 2025 season.

With the arrival of defender Kai Greene as a free agent signing earlier this week, Roots currently have 17 players under contract for the 2025 USL Championship season.

Rodriguez has been a mainstay for Roots since their arrival in the USL Championship in 2021 and has recorded 24 goals in 64 appearances across the past two campaigns in league play. The 26-year-old averaged a goal every 197.8 minutes during the 2024 campaign, and also notched three assists and 15 chances created.

Hackshaw will enter his third season with Oakland in 2025 after recording 57 appearances across all competitions over the past two seasons. The Trinidad and Tobago international has twice been a USL Championship All-League selection during his time with Indy Eleven in 2019 and 2020 and has made 213 regular season appearances in the Championship over his career, logging 16,511 minutes of action.

Oakland also announced it had declined contract options for Niall Logue, Napo Matsoso, and Trayvone Reid, while Paul Blanchette, Memo Diaz, and Irakoze Donasiyano are out of contract.
