SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC announced on Wednesday it had re-signed defenders Mitchell Taintor and Shannon Gomez to new contracts. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed, and the transactions are pending league and federation approval.
Taintor returns for his sixth season in San Antonio in 2025. His first stint with the club came in 2020, when he finished in the top five on the team in clearances, blocks and tackles. The Connecticut native later returned on loan from Sacramento Republic FC in August 2021 and appeared in all 13 matches to end the regular season and help SAFC make the Western Conference Final.
The 30-year-old re-signed with the Alamo City club in 2022 and earned the USL Championship Defender of the Year award after leading the squad with 72 interceptions and 24 blocks. The center back also tallied a career-best five goals and helped the SAFC defense match a league-record 17 shutouts in a single season while going on to secure the team’s first USL Championship title.
Taintor broke the club’s all-time appearance record in 2024 and holds the current record with 125 appearances across all competitions.
“I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity to keep representing SAFC and the great fan base that we have,” said Taintor. “I’m looking forward to helping lead the club to more success in the coming years and defending 210.”
Gomez signed with SAFC ahead of the team’s title-winning campaign in 2022. That season, the defender went on to bag two goals and provide eight assists in 2,466 minutes played, while finishing top five on the team defensively in clearances, tackles won and duels won. In his three seasons in San Antonio, Gomez has been influential both in the community and on the pitch and ranks fifth in all-time club appearances with 92.
Prior to joining SAFC, Gomez played four seasons with Sacramento Republic FC. He made 86 appearances across all competitions with the California club from 2018-21. The 28-year-old also spent time with MLS side New York City FC in 2017, joining Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on loan for the season.
Internationally, Gomez has 16 caps for the Trinidad and Tobago national team since debuting with the senior team in 2015. He appeared most recently in the squad’s Nations League matches against Cuba in October.
