LEXINGTON, Ky. – Lexington SC announced on Sunday that Darren Powell will transition to a technical leadership role within the organization after serving as the club’s Head Coach for the past USL League One season.
Powell guided Lexington to a 5-11-6 record in the League One regular season as the side finished in ninth place ahead of its transition into the USL Championship for the 2025 season. The club praised Powell’s role in establishing the team’s competitive identity and contributed to the foundational success of the club.
“At Lexington Sporting Club, we are dedicated to competing at the highest level,” said Lexington SC CEO Kim Shelton. “Darren embodies the values of our club with his character and approach to the game. Moving him into a technical role across the club enables us to reassess our first team's performance while giving our youth players the opportunity to learn from his professional standards.”
“I want to thank all the players, staff, fans and owners for their incredible efforts this past season,” added Powell. “As we continue to elevate LSC to new heights, I’m excited about the club’s future and the journey ahead together.”
Powell had previously served as the first Head Coach in San Antonio FC’s history between the 2016 and 2019 seasons. In that time, the club recorded a 53-41-36 record in the regular season but reached the USL Championship Playoffs on only one occasion.
Lexington announced it had launched a worldwide search for a new Head Coach, with the goal of appointing a successor before preparations begin for the 2025 USL Championship season.
