How LouCity, North Carolina gave us the wildest game of the season so far

10 goals, three braces, three own goals made for an incredible night of entertainment at WakeMed Soccer Park

The 10-goal epic between North Carolina FC and Louisville City FC on Saturday night was not the sort of game coaches will look back at happily.

“I guess it was good for the neutrals and the spectators, but it’s certainly not the way we anticipated the game was going to go or the way we drew it up. … We showed character when we conceded goals – bounced back immediately – but we lacked control of the game. That’s certainly not us, so we need to make sure we learn from it.”

And that was from LouCity assistant coach Simon Bird, whose side ended up with a 6-4 victory as he deputized for Head Coach Danny Cruz.

But, for the rest of us, it was one of the most wildly entertaining games of the season.

It was also pretty historic as well. Here’s how.

10 - The 10 goals LouCity and NCFC combined for was just the eighth game in the Championship’s regular season to reach double-digit goals. Louisville City has been involved in three of those contests and has come out on top all three times.

6 - LouCity’s six goals marked the third time the side had bagged six in a game away from home all-time, and the first time since a 6-0 win against the Richmond Kickers on August 25, 2018.

3 - The trio of Louisville City FC’s Jansen Wilson and Wilson Harris and North Carolina FC’s Oalex Anderson each recorded two-goal performances, only the eighth time in league history three players had recorded a brace in the same game.

3 – The own goals by North Carolina FC’s Paco Craig and Justin Malou and Louisville City FC’s Kyle Adams marked the first time in a USL Championship game three own goals had been scored in the same contest.

2 – North Carolina FC became only the fifth team to record two own goals in the same game in the USL Championship’s history. The four-minute margin between the two own goals ranked second to Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC against the Richmond Kickers in 2016, when the Hounds scored two own goals separated by three minutes.

1North Carolina conceded six goals at home for the first time in its history across either the USL Championship or USL League One. The side had conceded only nine goals in its previous 12 home games this season.
