The Charleston Battery’s Nick Markanich is becoming a man in demand.

On Wednesday afternoon, GiveMeSport.com’s Tom Bogert reported the Battery had turned down multiple offers for the current Championship Golden Boot leader’s services from La Liga 2 club CD Castellon.

A little later in the afternoon, Markanich confirmed those reports as he spoke with CBS Sports Golazo Network’s Scoreline.

“I mean, obviously [playing in Europe is] a goal of mine. I was told by my agent not too long ago about [it], and it excited me,” said Markanich. “We’ll see what happens, but it’s exciting to know that a team like that is interested.”

Since joining the Battery prior to the 2023 season, Markanich has shone as part of the club’s greater resurgence. The Illinois native scored 11 goals a season ago across the regular season and playoffs, including the opening goal in the 2023 USL Championship Final against Phoenix Rising FC, and has built on that success this season.

With 19 goals in 22 appearances, he leads the Championship’s Golden Boot race by seven tallies. Markanich has a chance to surpass the league’s single season record of 25 goals in a campaign with 12 games to go, with the Battery’s attacking approach also paying dividends as the side looks to add more silverware this season.

“It’s been a great year so far,” said Markanich. “I think the guys that were brought in at the beginning the year has helped myself and the team a lot, so all credit to them. I think everyone has been just clicking at the moment. We’re just playing for each other and they’re helping me out, putting me in the right positions, and I’m just finishing the chances.”
