Here’s a truth – for true expansion sides, getting to the USL Championship Playoffs is a difficult endeavor.
Yes, of the league’s recent arrivals, both Oakland Roots SC and Detroit City FC earned postseason berths in their first campaigns, but they were both previously established clubs with playing histories before stepping into the Championship.
For true expansion sides, you have to go back to 2019 for the last time one reached the playoffs. That season, Austin Bold FC, Birmingham Legion FC, El Paso Locomotive FC and New Mexico United each made it in, with Locomotive the cream of the crop as a No. 6 seed.
The changes that have occurred in the Championship – and the elevation in the quality we now see on the field just five years later – makes what Rhode Island is doing pretty remarkable.
The side’s undefeated streak reached seven games on Saturday night with the first comeback win in club history as Zach Herivaux – who apparently cannot stop scoring now – bagged the winner in a 2-1 victory against fellow playoff contender North Carolina FC.
It’s a far cry from the way the side started the season, fit to be tied and waiting until its seventh game to log its first victory. Now Rhode Island has won three in a row, five of its last six and has a five-point cushion to the teams below the playoff line.
This weekend, Head Coach Khano Smith, 2023 Championship Player of the Year Albert Dikwa and the rest of Rhode Island’s first-year squad gets the national spotlight on the CBS Television Network against Detroit City FC. In what was supposed to be a year for development before the club’s world-class stadium opens next year, Rhode Island has a chance to make a statement about where it is now, and where it’s going next.
Pick up another win, and the playoffs could feel certain to be in the club’s future.

Summary |
|
1 | Louisville City FC (14-4-2) Week 22: @ NM |
Last Week: 1 |
LouCity has won nine of 10 at Lynn Family Stadium after its romp past Monterey Bay F.C. on Saturday night. The league’s single-season record of 13 home wins might get obliterated.
2 | New Mexico United (12-4-2) Week 22: v. LV, v. LOU |
Last Week: 2 |
It’s wild to think that’s the first time Daniel Bruce has scored in a Derby Del Camino Real, but what a perfect time to do it with a game-winner. The United original keeps delivering.
3 | Tampa Bay Rowdies (11-4-5) Week 22: @ MB |
2
Last Week: 5 |
You could count the Rowdies fortunate to still be within touching distance of the Battery at halftime, but the moment the equalizer went in early in the second half it changed the momentum of the game.
4 | Charleston Battery (12-3-7) Week 22: v. IND |
Last Week: 4 |
The Battery hadn’t lost after holding a two-goal lead since the 2021 season before Saturday night, but now all of us – Charleston fans or not – wait and hope Aaron Molloy isn’t seriously hurt.
5 | Sacramento Republic FC (9-3-8) Week 22: v. PIT |
2 Last Week: 7 |
In just a cameo, returning from a 10-week injury absence – Russell Cicerone reminded everyone why he can help reignite the Republic FC attack. Great homecoming moment for the Michigan native.
6 | Rhode Island FC (6-4-10) Week 22: @ DET |
3 Last Week: 9 |
Chalk up another first for Rhode Island FC – the club’s first comeback victory. Whatever finishing training Zach Herivaux is on right now, we want in.
7 | Las Vegas Lights FC (7-7-7) Week 22: @ NM |
1 Last Week: 6 |
The Lights were probably fortunate to get out of Colorado Springs with a draw, but that’s why you have a goalkeeper like Raiko Arozarena. Nine games undefeated sets the club record.
8 | Loudoun United FC (7-7-6) Week 22: v. MIA |
5 Last Week: 3 |
Loudoun United took a point from two games, but continued to show why we can believe in the side as a postseason contender with a four-point gap to North Carolina now in hand.
9 | Memphis 901 FC (9-8-4) Week 22: v. ELP |
1 Last Week: 10 |
Welcome to the Bluff City, Triston Henry. That’s a really nice way to introduce yourself to 901 FC’s supporters.
10 | Birmingham Legion FC (9-8-4) Week 22: v. HFD |
1 Last Week: 11 |
Legion continues to be a second-half team – 21 of its 25 goals have come after halftime – but it did enough to keep Orange County under wraps on Saturday in the first half to take all three points.
11 | Indy Eleven (9-6-5) Week 21: @ CHS |
3 Last Week: 8 |
Five league games without a win now for the Boys in Blue. Friday’s draw at Tulsa wasn’t all that inspiring, either, which makes this week’s game with Charleston important.
12 | Oakland Roots SC (10-10-2) Week 22: --- |
Last Week: 12 |
Johnny Rodriguez isn’t someone whose really been in All-League contention in years past, but he’s stepping up this season and did again in an important Roots win, even against lowly Miami.
13 | Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (8-8-4) Week 22: v. PHX |
Last Week: 13 |
If Ronaldo Damus gets his timing right in the second half, the Switchbacks easily beat the Lights. Got to be sharper if you’re going to toe the offside line.
14 | North Carolina FC (5-7-8) Week 22: @ OC |
Last Week: 14 |
Mikey Maldonado’s goal was excellent but that was the third time NCFC has lost after leading this season. Those are the sorts of results that wreck playoff aspirations.
15 | Detroit City FC (8-6-4) Week 22: @ HFD, v. RI |
Last Week: 15 |
Yeah, the loss stung against Republic FC, but there was plenty to like about Le Rouge’s performance overall going into a crucial game on CBS against Rhode Island FC. Heads up, focus.
16 | Orange County SC (8-10-3) Week 22: v. NC |
Last Week: 16 |
We probably could have told you that was going to happen for Orange County SC. In their last five games they’ve taken two good home wins and been held scoreless in defeat three times on the road.
17 | Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (5-9-7) Week 22: @ SAC |
2 Last Week: 19 |
The Hounds have scored in the opening 15 minutes of each of the past three games, something they hadn’t done previously all season. Missing out on a win against a team you’re chasing hurts, though.
18 | FC Tulsa (5-6-7) Week 22: @ SA |
2 Last Week: 20 |
In honesty, Tulsa looked the more likely side to win on Friday night against Indy Eleven. That’s not going to happen if you don’t put a single shot on target, though.
19 | Phoenix Rising FC (6-7-6) Week 22: @ COS |
1 Last Week: 18 |
After how promising things looked the prior week, Friday night was just tedious. Still no consecutive wins this season, and a missed opportunity with defeats for others.
20 | Monterey Bay F.C. (7-9-5) Week 22: @ TBR |
3 Last Week: 17 |
If you’re playing the highest-scoring team in the league away from home, the last thing you can do is concede twice in seven minutes. There was never going to be a way back from that.
21 | San Antonio FC (5-10-5) Week 22: v. TUL |
Last Week: 21 |
Another loss. Another game without finding the net. Granted, there were chances, but the late-game mojo San Antonio used to be known for has gone missing.
22 | Hartford Athletic (5-11-3) Week 22: v. DET, @ BHM |
Last Week: 22 |
Hartford had to know it needed a win on Friday night to try and close the gap to the top eight, which makes its lackluster display all the more disappointing. The playoff drought’s shows no sign of ending.
23 | El Paso Locomotive FC (3-14-3) Week 22: @ MEM |
Last Week: 23 |
Locomotive put up the battle you’d expect in a derby, but it was second-best in most areas against New Mexico and we’ve reached the tipping point for playoff potential. 14 games to go, 14 points out.
24 | Miami FC (2-17-2) Week 22: @ LDN |
Last Week: 24 |
Bless you, Frank Lopez. The Cuban veteran continues to show up as Miami drifts from view at the bottom of the standings. |
