The 2023 USL Championship Young Player of the Year is on his way to one of Mexico’s most historic clubs.

Former Charleston Battery star Fidel Barajas was unveiled as the newest signing by Chivas de Guadalarara on July 2 following his transfer from Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer ahead of the 2024 Liga MX Clausura which kicks off in July.

Under terms of the transfer agreement, the Battery will receive a portion of the club-record transfer fee paid to Real Salt Lake, reported to be north of $4 million by The Athletic’s Tom Bogert and Jeff Rueter. Barajas joined RSL this past January and has recorded two assists in 17 appearances in MLS while also notching his first goal for the club in its Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup defeat to New Mexico United in May.

Barajas shone for the Battery during the 2023 season, recording five goals and 11 assists in 32 appearances across the regular season and playoffs. In addition to being voted the Championship’s Young Player of the Year, he earned selection to the All-League Second Team as the Battery claimed the Eastern Conference title.

A native of Sacramento, Calif., Barajas represented Mexico at the FIFA U-17 World Cup last November in Indonesia and holds dual-national status. He becomes the latest dual-national star to join Chivas, following fellow former Championship standout Cade Cowell – who stands as the youngest American goalscorer in league history – last January.

Chivas will kick off the Apertura campaign on July 6 at home to Toluca. Kickoff is at 9 p.m. ET and will air on Telemundo in the United States.
