Birmingham Legion FC took its first victory against Detroit City FC after four prior defeats in the series, and handed Le Rouge their first home defeat this season on Wednesday night as a pair of late goals by Derek Dodson and Phanuel Kavita delivered a 2-1 win at Keyworth Stadium.
Here are three storylines we took away from the night’s action.
It had been 1,421 days since Phanuel Kavita had found the net in the USL Championship, and he had made 112 USL Championship appearances for Birmingham Legion FC – plus others in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup – without finding the net since joining the club. So it was only logical the 31-year-old would pop up in the right place to put home the goal that ended Detroit City FC’s hex over Legion with four minutes to go.
Kavita’s goal was just the fifth of a USL Championship career that has now spanned 233 appearances across the regular season and playoffs and is currently closing in on 20,000 regular season minutes. While he’s been best known for helping keep opponents from finding the net, this was a moment for him and Legion’s fans to relish.
Birmingham Legion FC Head Coach Tom Soehn played with the shape of his lineup on Wednesday night, dropping Enzo Martinez back into midfield as part of a diamond that theoretically featured Prosper Kasim at the top with Tabort Etaka Preston and Tyler Pasher given freedom as an attacking pair. In the opening half, it didn’t quite seem to come off with the timing among the midfield and forwards simply not in-sync to the tune of one off-target shot countered by a pair of offside calls.
The player that held things together confidently, though, was 21-year-old midfielder Kobe Hernandez-Foster at the base of the diamond. The midfielder completed 45 of 46 passes overall – second-most to Alex Crognale’s 49 completed passes in Legion’s lineup – and when Soehn brought on Moses Mensah and Diba Nwegbo to add more verticality in search of the result, it provided Hernandez-Foster with more room to influence the game and keep Detroit under pressure. That eventually told by way of the visitors’ two late set piece goals, jumping Legion ahead of Detroit in the East.
During Detroit City FC’s lengthy winless run throughout the month of May, the absence of an injury Elvis Amoh was evident. Le Rouge found a way to turn things around before the Cameroonian’s return, but in his first start since April 6 the influence Amoh can bring to the lineup – and opposing back lines – was in evidence again.
Detroit hadn’t created much in the first half until it took the lead six minutes before halftime, where Amoh’s ability to draw attention was key. Drifting to the left after receiving a pass from Alex Villanueva, he drew the attention of two defenders, then picked out the free man in Ben Morris in the left channel, who proceeded to feed Rhys Williams for a sharp turning finish into the bottom-right corner.
Amoh doesn’t always find the net, but his ability as a No. 9 has made him a big addition for Detroit’s attack this season. His absence in the final half-hour as he continued to build back to 90-minutes fit was evident as the hosts struggled for a consistent outlet and attacking presence in the face of Legion’s pressure.
