By the numbers this season, Detroit City FC had one of the better defensive records in the USL Championship through its first eight games.

When it comes to Louisville City FC’s attack, however, how good your defense might be doesn’t seem to matter when you visit Lynn Family Stadium.

For a seventh occasion across the Championship’s regular season and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, LouCity put up their standard minimum of three goals – and then tacked on a couple more for good measure – in a 5-1 romp that continued the home domination Head Coach Danny Cruz’s side has delivered so far this season.

What’s more, LouCity showed all the ways it can beat you.  

After going behind for the first time at home this season 11 minutes before halftime, the hosts responded by showing off their players’ versatility. Recycling a free kick on the right that had been half-cleared, Wes Charpie showed off his old instincts as a full back to deliver a pin-point cross to fellow center back Arturo Ordoñez for a crisp header home.

The move to take the lead three minutes after the break, meanwhile, was simple, effective teamwork. Shifting his speeds on the left, Jake Morris kept possession alive and drew an extra defender’s attention. That created space for Adrien Perez, who was as elusive as he was patient to retain possession before finding Jorge Gonzalez for a give-and-go Perez tucked away beautifully.

The third and fourth to seal the game were great moments of individualism. DCFC’s Stephen Carroll is a fine defender, but Wilson Harris’ tight control and turn inside the right half of the penalty area as he deked to shoot shook Carroll before he produced a precise finish to the top-left corner. Then Morris – who had had sighters in the first half – delivered a precise low finish to the bottom-right corner.

“Once we got one, I think the mindset was ‘we’re going to push to get another three,’” said Harris. “That’s kind of how it is right now at home, and we’ve just got to keep pushing ourselves to always do that.”

To put a final bow on proceedings, LouCity’s pressure created one of the six instances in which it won possession in Detroit’s defensive third before Sam Gleadle was brought down in the penalty area. Harris stepped up to dispatch the penalty kick for his 10th of the season.

Handed the captain’s armband for the night, the 24-year-old delivered another vintage performance.

“I think we have a leadership group where the five of them are capable to wear the armband,” said Cruz. “I felt Willie tonight deserved the opportunity to wear it, and I thought he did an excellent job. You know, I’ve talked to these guys about it. It’s something you don't take for granted. It’s an honor, I think, if any manager asked you to wear it, and I thought he did a great job tonight.”

Louisville City FC has now scored 27 goals in six regular season games on home turf this season. That’s already six goals more than it scored in the regular season a year ago, when the side’s attack sputtered uncharacteristically resulting in LouCity’s lowest regular season finish in its history.

Put it all together and you have the team, the leadership and the support that has made Lynn Family Stadium the strongest fortress in the Championship this season, just as Cruz and his players envisioned.

“I think the players have certainly taken that message on board. The performances at home, for the most part, have been excellent,” said Cruz. “We need to continue to put on performances like that at home. It gives us the best chance to progress throughout the season and finish on the table where we want to be.”
