2021 USL Championship Young Player of the Year Jonathan Gomez scored a stunner for his first goal for current club C.D. Mirandes on Sunday evening, and it couldn’t have come at a more timely moment.
With Mirandes locked in a relegation battle going into its penultimate game of the season and level on the road with Albacete, the 20-year-old left back joined the attack early in the second half and was in the right place to take advantage of a second opportunity, controlling after teammate Carlos Martin’s initial shot had been saved before going bar-down from 16 yards out to put the visitors ahead.

Mirandes wouldn’t be able to hold onto its lead as the game ended in a 2-2 draw, but the point could prove crucial in its overall hopes for survival. Sitting in 18th place, the side will face SD Amorebieta at home in its final game of the season with the visitors sitting in 19th place, one point behind. A win or a draw for Mirandes will secure its place in the second tier for a sixth consecutive campaign.
Individually, Gomez has had a good campaign on loan from Real Sociedad. In addition to his first goal on Sunday, he has recorded four assists and 20 chances created while winning 53.8 percent of duels and 68.1 percent of tackles in his 2,901 minutes of action.
As the former Louisville City FC star continues to make his way toward contention for Real Sociedad’s First Team, a successful final day of the campaign would bring the curtain down on a good year in LaLiga Hypermotion toward that goal.
