New Mexico takes control against San Antonio, and takes top spot after a perfect month

Want arguably the most impressive number behind New Mexico United’s victory against San Antonio FC on Saturday night?

In the final half-hour, when San Antonio was chasing the game trailing by a goal, that was close to what they did the most of.

Chase.

New Mexico’s control of possession in its own half and midfield meant that after the hour-mark, SAFC didn’t officially register a shot.

That was by design. For United Head Coach Eric Quill, his side had played into San Antonio’s hands in the first half, giving up possession to easily which allowed the visitors to got direct and outshoot them 5-1 in the opening half-hour. Included in that was Luke Haakenson’s beautifully taken finish of a dime of an assist by Kevon Lambert.

But after Greg Hurst had provided the impetus for New Mexico to take the lead before the halftime break, the hosts got back to what has been a key part of their identity this season.

“If we have some long spells of possession and tire their legs out, then we start to get confidence,” said Quill. “When you get these eight to 10 to 12 pass sequences, right? Everybody gets a touch, and everybody's confidence starts to go high. And that's what our brand of football is, is guys sharing the ball, one- and two-touch, moving off the ball. And I thought you saw that beautifully in the second half.”

New Mexico went a perfect 5-0-0 in May, including wins against Real Salt Lake and New York City FC II to advance to the Quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup for a second time. Sitting on top of the West with 22 points, it’s off to its best 10-game start to a season in club history, surpassing the 20 points it earned in the abbreviated 2020 season.

There’s a long way to go this season, but New Mexico fits the profile of a contender.

Summary

1 New Mexico United
(7-2-1)
Week 13: @ MB
3
Last Week:
4
New Mexico has scored multiple goals in every game of its perfect five-win month of May across all competitions and still has a game in hand on Sacramento after jumping into first.
2 Indy Eleven
(6-4-2)
Week 13: @ PIT
3
Last Week:
5
The Boys in Blue completed a perfect month with six wins in all competitions with victory against Phoenix as Jack Blake continues to shine in all facets of the game.
3 Charleston Battery
(8-1-3)
Week 13: @ MB
2
Last Week:
1
The undefeated run was fated to come to an end at some point, but you’d hardly have known the Battery were down to 10 players as effectively as they played in the second half.
4 Sacramento Republic FC
(5-0-6)
Week 13: v. TBR
1
Last Week:
3
Republic FC couldn’t summon the same magic as it found in the Open Cup in midweek against a solid Birmingham set-up. They’re incredibly hard to beat but need to convert more wins.
5 Louisville City FC
(7-1-2)
Week 13: v. DET, @ MIA
3
Last Week:
2
The home-road splits LouCity is showing through its first 10 games (5-0-0, +18GD at home; 2-1-2, +1GD away) are pretty stark. Good thing they’re at home against Detroit City on Wednesday.
6 Tampa Bay Rowdies
(5-2-4)
Week 13: @ SAC
1
Last Week:
7
Losing Forrest Lasso is a blow, but the Rowdies’ persistence found a way past Las Vegas for an important win. They’re up to second in the league in Expected Goals, too, so there could be much more to come.
7 Memphis 901 FC
(5-5-1)
Week 13: @ SA
3
Last Week:
10
Marlon Santos’ assist streak ended at four games, but now he’s on a four-game scoring streak instead. Remarkable run of form since his move into the No. 9 position.
8 Detroit City FC
(5-1-2)
Week 13: @ LOU, @ OC
2
Last Week:
6
Le Rouge are in need of a boost after their last couple of outings. A two-game week going to Louisville and Orange County could be challenging.
9 Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC
(4-5-1)
Week 13: v. OAK
2
Last Week:
11
The Switchbacks come out of their bye week below the playoff line but having won four games in a row as Oakland comes to visit on Saturday.
10 Loudoun United FC
(4-6-2)
Week 13: v. TUL
5
Last Week:
15
Loudoun might have ridden its luck a little in eliminating Orange County from the Open Cup earlier this month, but there was nothing fortunate about its repeat win on Saturday night.
11 Phoenix Rising FC
(4-5-3)
Week 13: @ LV
3
Last Week:
8
That’s an awfully long way to travel to get knocked out of the Open Cup and see your four-game undefeated run in the league come to an end. Las Vegas may not be an easy contest, either.
12 Birmingham Legion FC
(4-4-3)
Week 13: @ ELP
1
Last Week:
13
Legion is still struggling for goals, but it seems to have figured things out a bit more defensively. Taking a point in Sacramento is solid enough.
13 North Carolina FC
(3-4-5)
Week 13: --
3
Last Week:
16
North Carolina didn’t make the most of its best opportunities but still scored four goals in the second half against Miami. We’ll have that Mikey Maldonado Olimpico running on a loop for a few days.
14 Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC
(3-4-4)
Week 13: v. IND
5
Last Week:
9
If the Hounds conceding early seems abnormal, you’re right. This season they’ve already conceded three times in the opening 15 minutes. That only happened four times all of last season.
15 San Antonio FC
(3-3-5)
Week 13: v. MEM
3
Last Week:
12
We saw San Antonio go for winless stretches last season, but not like this. Two defeats after taking the lead in the past four league games isn’t the SAFC we’ve been accustomed to.
16 Oakland Roots SC
(4-6-2)
Week 13: @ COS
2
Last Week:
18
Oakland found a way by hook or by crook to get three points in Tulsa. It wasn’t that pretty, but when you’re trying to get back into the playoff race it doesn’t have to be.
17 Orange County SC
(4-4-3)
Week 13: v. DET
3
Last Week:
14
Three consecutive defeats has made that unbeaten run to start the season a distant memory. OCSC is still in the top four, but that could change quickly as clustered as things are.
18 Monterey Bay F.C.
(4-5-3)
Week 13: v. CHS, v. NM
1
Last Week:
17
We’re getting flashbacks to last season when Monterey Bay was unable to pull itself out of lengthy runs without a win. Hosting the East-leading Battery on Wednesday wouldn’t appear to be a remedy.
19 Hartford Athletic
(4-6-0)
Week 13: v. RI
4
Last Week:
23
Hartford finally snapped out of its funk with victory at home against Monterey Bay. Who had Thomas Vancaeyezeele’s first two-assist game in the league on their bingo card?
20 El Paso Locomotive FC
(2-8-2)
Week 13: v. BHM
2
Last Week:
22
The upside; victory against the Eastern Conference leaders. The downside; you got outplayed by 10 in the second half and almost conceded another late equalizer. There’s still a long way to go here.
21 Las Vegas Lights FC
(3-7-2)
Week 13: v. PHX
2
Last Week:
19
Las Vegas almost held off the Rowdies until Cal Jennings slid one home late. Time to reset for a home opportunity against Phoenix.
22 FC Tulsa
(2-4-4)
Week 13: @ LDN
2
Last Week:
20
In a just world, Tulsa would have got something out of its contest against Oakland on Friday night. Unfortunately, that’s just not how it works sometimes.
23 Rhode Island FC
(1-3-7)
Week 13: @ HFD
2
Last Week:
21
You can’t fault the effort, but the lack of goals is starting to get concerning. It should get better, but you never know.
24 Miami FC
(2-9-1)
Week 13: v. LOU

Last Week:
24
With El Paso’s win, Miami now sits with the fewest points in the league after a fourth consecutive defeat and only four shots total against North Carolina FC, its lowest mark in a game this season.
