Wesley Leggett scored a pair of goals and Dane Jacomen had a key second-half penalty save as Loudoun United FC advanced to the Round of 16 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 2-1 victory against Orange County SC at Championship Soccer Stadium on Wednesday night.

Loudoun will visit the winner between Las Vegas Lights FC and Los Angeles FC, who play on Wednesday night at Cashman Field, in the next round on May 21-22.

Leggett put the visitors ahead in the 22nd minute as he showed composure to beat his defender to move into the left side of the penalty area and then fired home into the opposite corner of the net. That proved the best chance for either side in the first half, but the contest heated up after the break in a dramatic five-minute spell that saw the game tilt Loudoun’s way.

Orange County tied the game up initially in the 62nd minute when Thomas Amang was on hand to score from close range after Christian Sorto’s volleyed cross into the six-yard area from the right side of the penalty area set up the opportunity. Two minutes later, Leggett answered back as he broke onto a well-directed ball by Gavin Turner in behind the Orange County defense before lifting a powerful finish home from the left side of the penalty area.

Three minutes later the pendulum threatened to swing back in Orange County’s direction when the hosts were awarded a penalty kick. Markus Nakkim stepped up to the spot but had his shot to the left corner turned wide of the post by Jacomen.

That proved the decisive moment as Loudoun maintained its lead to claim the club’s first victory all-time in California and earn a return trip to the West coast later this month.

FC TULSA 1, PITTSBURGH RIVERHOUNDS SC 0: Phillip Goodrum scored the only goal with two minutes to go as FC Tulsa advanced to the Round of 16 for the first time in club history with victory against the Hounds at Highmark Stadium.

Pittsburgh went close to opening the scoring in the fifth minute when EJ Johnson’s shot from the edge of the penalty area was mishandled by Tulsa goalkeeper Joey Roggeveen but slid wide of the right post. Babacar Diene also had a chance for the hosts later in the first half but headed wide a free kick.

Tulsa made a stronger start to a more balanced second half between the sides, and Milo Yosef had a goal ruled out for offside as he redirected home a header off a corner kick at close range. As time ticked down, however, Goodrum provided an opportunistic finish off a long throw-in that found the left corner to send the visitors through.

FC DALLAS 1, MEMPHIS 901 FC 0: 2023 USL League Two Player of the Year Logan Farrington provided the winner as FC Dallas advanced despite a resolute road performance by 901 FC at Toyota Stadium.

Dallas threatened in the 13th minute when Tsiki Ntsabeleng had a shot deflected wide of the left post, while nine minutes later Marlon shot just over the crossbar from the left side of the penalty area.

The hosts had another chance just before halftime when Nkosi Tafari had a header saved by Memphis goalkeeper Tyler Deric, while Petar Musa clipped a finish over early in the second half. Dallas took the lead with 17 minutes to go, however, as Farrington stole in on a free kick to control and finish into the right corner, and while 901 FC had chances to level in the closing stages the hosts were able to see out the result.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES 1, OAKLAND ROOTS SC 0: Second-half substitute Ousseni Bouda scored the decisive goal with 14 minutes to go as the Quakes advanced after Oakland was unable to take advantage of its first-half opportunities at PayPal Park.

Roots had a strong spell of pressure to close out the first half as Jeciel Cedeno had a powerful shot to the near post from the right side of the penalty area saved while Johnny Rodriguez also went close twice as the visitors pressed San Jose goalkeeper Emmanuel Ochoa’s goal.

San Jose was able to weather that spell, however, and took the lead when Bouda was given enough space outside the top-right edge of the penalty area to pick out the bottom-left corner of the net, clipping the inside of the post. Rodriguez was sent off for Oakland with eight minutes to go, and from there the visitors were unable to muster a late response.
