New appointment led Le Rouge to perfect start to the season with three wins from three

TAMPA, Fla. – The USL Championship announced today Detroit City FC’s Danny Dichio had been awarded the Championship’s Coach of the Month award for March, with the first-time Head Coach earning the honor after leading Le Rouge to a perfect start to the 2024 season.

An assistant coach for the past two seasons at Sacramento Republic FC, Dichio was appointed as the fourth Head Coach in club history last November and has quickly put his imprint on the side. Taking the reins from current DCFC Sporting Director Trevor James, the 49-year-old led the side to victories on the road against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC and Indy Eleven and at home to Loudoun United FC as its new attacking style paid early dividends this season.

After recording the fewest goals in the USL Championship’s regular season in 2023, the side has already shown a marked improvement as Dichio has proven an ideal fit for his new surroundings.

“I know a lot about the game, I know a lot about the organization and how clubs are run and now hopefully passing on that knowledge and experience as a Head Coach is going to help me in the long run, but I couldn’t have been happier to be at a club like Detroit,” Dichio told CBS Sports Golazo Network in a recent interview. “I’ve embraced the city – which is a great city to live in – and the community that really gets behind their club as well, it’s fantastic to be a part of.”

Dichio earned the award with 53 percent of the ballot. Louisville City FC’s Danny Cruz finished second on 38 percent after also leading his side to a perfect month of March with three wins from three games against opponents that reached the 2023 USL Championship Playoffs.

The USL Championship’s Coach of the Month award is voted upon by the USL Championship National Media Panel and the USL Championship Technical Committee, with each group responsible for 50 percent of the overall vote.
