For real, a mirage, or too early to tell? How three positive starts look under the microscope

You know the season’s begun when teams are already posting about their position on the USL Championship’s Power Rankings, a completely arbitrary means of judging where a team stands that actually matters very little in the grand scheme of things.

Congratulations, Loudoun United FC social media team. You made us laugh, at least.

Loudoun is on top of the Eastern Conference after two games, and is one of three teams that weren’t popular preseason picks to get out of the blocks well alongside Monterey Bay F.C. and Oakland Roots SC.

So, maybe a quick look at whether this feels for real or not is needed?

Loudoun United FC (1-0-1, 4pts, +2GD) – Two impressive results here, for sure, including rallying for a point while down a player at San Antonio FC. At the same time, we remember last year – the great start to the season, the promise of it being a turning point, and how it all ended up with five wins in the last 31 games of the season.

There are echoes of that here. Loudoun has five goals on 1.53 Expected Goals – small sample size, certainly, but maybe destined to cool off – but it feels like there’s also something more substantial in place here as well. Head Coach Ryan Martin has been well-admired by his peers for a while, and now he could have the squad to make it work.

Monterey Bay F.C. (1-0-1, 4pts, +1GD) – Taking a first win against Phoenix Rising FC in club history was big, but how Monterey Bay played in its victory on Saturday was bigger. The hosts pressed the defending title holders, carried more of the play, and deserved their three points.

What was maybe most telling came after the game, though, in Head Coach Frank Yallop’s comments. “We’re trying to work on that, especially this year with the guys we have that are willing and able to fight and run and do the right things and listen to the coaching.” Change can be a good thing to break old habits.

Oakland Roots SC (1-0-1, 4pts, +1GD) – Of the three teams we’ve got in the spotlight, Oakland’s start might feel the most fragile. They’re not creating a ton of chances yet, although they are taking advantage of the big ones so far.

What Oakland has also shown in its first two games, however, is an ability to adjust, with Head Coach Noah Delgado making astute in-game moves to balance the playing field for his side. It resulted in a point against the Charleston Battery on Saturday. Get the right pieces in the right places enough, and there’s a formula for a postseason berth.

Here’s how this week’s rankings look.

Birmingham Legion FC Charleston Battery Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC Detroit City FC El Paso Locomotive FC Hartford Athletic Indy Eleven

Summary

1 Sacramento Republic FC
(1-0-1)
Week 3: @ IND

Last Week:
1
That was about as complete a 1-0 victory as you might see this season in Miami, and Trevor Amann is – as expected – looking like the real deal at center forward.
2 Louisville City FC
(1-0-0)
Week 3: v. PIT
1
Last Week:
3
Wilson Harris has currently scored a goal every 160.1 minutes in the USL Championship in his career. Among 50-goal scorers, only six players have a better strike rate.
3 Tampa Bay Rowdies
(0-0-1)
Week 3: @ NC
1
Last Week:
2
Tampa Bay looked extremely good for 75 minutes before their legs started to tire, allowing San Antonio back into the game. There’s plenty to feel good about here, though.
4 Charleston Battery
(0-0-2)
Week 3: v. NM

Last Week:
4
The Battery haven’t won yet but have looked the better team in their two road trips so far this season. Saturday’s home opener with New Mexico should be a great contest.
5 Birmingham Legion FC
(1-0-0)
Week 3: @ HFD

Last Week:
5
Legion gets back to action on Saturday afternoon at Hartford Athletic. Two wins out of two to start the season could be there for the taking.
6 San Antonio FC
(0-0-2)
Week 3: v. COS

Last Week:
6
San Antonio got squeezed – and went more direct at times as a result – against Tampa Bay, but it was still able to summon the late-game magic.
7 Hartford Athletic
(1-0-0)
Week 3: v. BHM

Last Week:
7
Hartford played a pair of scrimmages on Saturday afternoon to stay sharp ahead of its home opener against Birmingham. It can reach 50 percent of its 2023 wins with all three points against Legion.
8 Orange County SC
(1-0-1)
Week 3: v. MIA
2
Last Week:
10
Orange County got two shots, scored two goals, and made out of Pittsburgh with all three points. That’s a model of efficiency.
9 New Mexico United
(1-0-1)
Week 3: @ CHS
1
Last Week:
8
Big credit to Alex Tambakis for New Mexico’s point on the road. His nine-save shutout – including a key double-stop in second-half stoppage time – were outstanding.
10 Indy Eleven
(1-1-0)
Week 3: v. SAC
1
Last Week:
11
The Boys in Blue have played two great first halves, and Jack Blake looks like the player who won the USL Championship title five years ago. Stretch that a little further and Indy will be a threat.
11 Oakland Roots SC
(1-0-1)
Week 3: @ PHX
3
Last Week:
14
Oakland has shown its resilience in the opening two games of the season, and how about Ilya Alekseev coming through with a goal in his debut? Tremendous stuff.
12 Monterey Bay F.C.
(1-0-1)
Week 3: v. RI
12
Last Week:
24
We had questions about Monterey Bay, no doubt. It has answered a lot of them in these opening two games, now to see if they can keep it rolling.
13 FC Tulsa
(1-0-0)
Week 3: ---
4
Last Week:
17
You can put a qualifier on the opponent, but FC Tulsa looked very bright in Las Vegas on Saturday. Congratulations to Head Coach Mario Sanchez on a debut victory.
14 Loudoun United FC
(1-0-1)
Week 3: @ DET
7
Last Week:
21
It wasn’t a perfect performance by any means, but Loudoun’s players made themselves count in the big moments against North Carolina. That definitely counts for something.
15 Detroit City FC
(1-0-0)
Week 3: v. LDN
7
Last Week:
22
Le Rouge’s new attacking pieces seemed to fit together very nicely in Colorado Springs, which is hardly an easy place to go and play your first game. Big confidence boost for Elvis Amoh to open his account, too.
16 Phoenix Rising FC
(0-2-0)
Week 3: v. OAK
7
Last Week:
9
After a good attacking performance wasn’t rewarded in the opener, Rising fell a bit flat in Monterey Bay. No big worries yet, but Saturday’s game at home to Oakland isn’t a gimme either.
17 Rhode Island FC
(0-0-1)
Week 3: @ MB
2
Last Week:
19
A point was the least Rhode Island deserved from its opening game in club history. There will be victories soon if they keep playing like that.
18 North Carolina FC
(0-1-1)
Week 3: v. TBR
6
Last Week:
12
NCFC’s defense got sliced up in the second half by Loudoun’s incisive passing. That’s not what we were expecting to see.
19 Memphis 901 FC
(1-1-0)
Week 3: ---
6
Last Week:
13
Kudos to AB Cissoko on his spectacular finish, but Memphis didn’t seem to show up until they were down to 10 players. Need that second-half energy at full strength.
20 Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC
(0-2-0)
Week 3: @ SA
4
Last Week:
16
It’s been a while since Colorado Springs hasn’t picked up a win in its first two games of the season. A visit to San Antonio – which has been a house of horrors for the Switchbacks – is up next.
21 Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC
(0-2-0)
Week 3: @ LOU
3
Last Week:
18
The Hounds looked much brighter in their home opener than they did against New Mexico. Still looking for that first goal of the season, though.
22 El Paso Locomotive
(0-2-1)
Week 3: @ LV
7
Last Week:
15
On the bright side, one point from three games is an improvement on last season. Going to Vegas this weekend, three points are going to be imperative.
23 Miami FC
(1-1-0)
Week 3: @ OC
3
Last Week:
20
Miami at least showed its mettle defensively, but the difference in class with Sacramento was marked.
24 Las Vegas Lights FC
(0-2-0)
Week 3: v. ELP
1
Last Week:
23
The new stand and suites on the far side of Cashman Field are a marked upgrade, and the Dominican connection between Riki Alba and Edison Azcona was sweet as well.
