DETROIT – Detroit City FC announced on Monday the retirement of defender Matt Lewis, with the veteran defender having spent the past three seasons with Le Rouge, the past two of which saw the side earn trips to the USL Championship Playoffs after joining the league in 2022.

“After much reflection and consideration, I have decided to retire from professional soccer due to family matters,” said Lewis in a statement. “With a mix of emotions, I announce this transition, but I am grateful for the incredible journey I’ve experienced as a member of Detroit City FC.

“My time wearing the Detroit City FC crest has been extraordinary. Every moment has been etched into my heart forever, from Keyworth Stadium’s electric atmosphere to our dedicated supporters’ unwavering support.”

Lewis joined the professional ranks with Sporting Kansas City in 2018, signing as a Homegrown Player after competing collegiately at Fordham University, and made 12 appearances for Sporting Kansas City II in the USL Championship to start his career.

He subsequently joined the New York Cosmos before arriving in Detroit, first on loan and then as a free agent signing in March 2021. The 27-year-old made 51 appearances for Le Rouge across the past two seasons in the USL Championship, helping the side reach the postseason in both campaigns.
