Orange County SC has signed left-sided defender Charlie Asensio, who spent the past two seasons with Austin FC of Major League Soccer.

IRVINE, Calif. – Orange County SC announced on Tuesday the club had signed defender Charlie Asensio ahead of the 2024 USL Championship season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.

Asensio most recently competed for Austin FC, where he made one appearance in the Concacaf Champions League while also competing on loan with Austin FC II in MLS NEXT Pro. This past season, he made 24 appearances and played 1,805 minutes for ATXFC II, while helping lead the side to the MLS NEXT Pro title.

“I am so excited to be joining this amazing club and am very grateful for the opportunity,” said Asensio. “The team had a very successful season last year and I look forward to contributing in any way possible to even more success this upcoming year. I can’t wait to play in front of this incredible fanbase and bring them home a trophy.”

Asensio previously competed in the USL Championship with the Charleston Battery in 2022 on loan from Austin. He made 15 appearances for the Battery and tallied two assists in just under 1,100 minutes of action. Prior to joining the professional ranks, Asensio had 10 caps at various levels of the United States Youth National Team program.

“We are excited to add Charlie to the squad,” said OCSC President of Soccer Operations and General Manager Peter Nugent. “He is a player who is very comfortable in possession and looks to be progressive with the ball from deeper areas, all qualities we wanted to add to the group this season. His technical abilities will provide healthy competition within our backline in 2024.”
