28-year-old joins from Charlotte FC, has recorded 33 regular season appearances in MLS

San Antonio FC has signed goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega, who made five appearances across the past two seasons for Charlotte FC in Major League Soccer.

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC announced on Friday the club had signed goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega ahead of the 2024 USL Championship season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval, and per team policy terms of the deal were not disclosed.

A native of Mexico City, Sisniega brings nine years of professional experience to San Antonio, having spent the last two years with Charlotte FC of Major League Soccer. Before his time in Charlotte, Sisniega spent two seasons with Los Angeles FC, helping the team to its first MLS Supporters’ Shield in 2019. Over the course of his career in MLS, he appeared in 33 regular season matches, registering 2,970 minutes and four clean sheets.

“We're excited to welcome Pablo to the team,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “A top professional with valuable experience from MLS and Spain, he embodies the high-performing qualities we look for in a goalkeeper, including exceptional leadership. This significant signing will enhance competition within our goalkeeping group.”

The 28-year-old spent his youth career with multiple top academy sides in the United States and abroad, including Chivas Guadalajara of Liga MX, Philadelphia Union of MLS and Real Sociedad of La Liga. He began his professional career in 2014 with Real Sociedad B, posting 14 clean sheets in 38 appearances over five seasons.

Analysis

Pablo Sisniega arrives in San Antonio FC aiming to compete for a starting position for the 2022 title winner having made five appearances across the past two seasons as a back-up at Charlotte FC. With a career goals-against average of 1.55 and save percentage of 64.2 percent, the 28-year-old was unable to find a consistent foothold in top flight action, with his season-high for appearances coming in the abbreviated 2020 season for LAFC with 14.

Sisniega’s cumulative goals prevented mark sits at +6.16 per American Soccer Analysis. Coming on the heels of San Antonio’s loan for Nick Marsman late last regular season and into the USL Championship Playoffs, the question of whether the club is confident in 2022 Championship Goalkeeper of the Year Jordan Farr – who has posted a save percentage of 73.3 percent, and a goals prevented mark of -1.62 over the past two seasons – will be a storyline going into preseason.
